CHDV 210 Curriculum Activities Self Evaluation Form

Please reflect on these questions as you evaluate each of the 5 activities that you present.

Why did you choose this particular activity? (DRDP, conversation with child, etc.)
I chose this activity because the children get to use their senses as they taste each apple and
give a description of what it might taste like. Children also use their math skills as they try to
estimate the amount of seeds in each apple. With that in mind, this activity supports scientific
inquiry skills. Worth and Grollman (2003) explain that, children develop their inquiry skills
as they investigate interesting subject matter, and children build theories about interesting
subject matter through the use of inquiry skills (Epstein, 2007, p. 43).

What were the strong points of this activity?

The children really enjoyed sampling each apple and became really curious when it came to
revealing the inside of the apple to see how many seeds each apple carried. Children
discussed amongst each other what the apples tasted like which really surprised me.

What were the weak areas?

When it came to graphing their estimations it became a little difficult to try to keep them
engaged with it. They were more interested in tasting the apples. I still managed to graph
their estimations and those who were interested looked at it.

What specific changes did you try out when you presented the activity a second time?
There wasnt much I had to change for the second time. I presented all the apples to them and
allowed them to guess how many seeds were in each, and before I had them taste the apples I
put their estimations up on the graph. They were able to see which group got the closest to
the right answer.

Evaluate the success of these revisions. How might you improve next time? (Focus on your
teaching skills)
Next time I would like the graph to be more hands on for them where they can put things up
on the graph and experience it for themselves. I would change the graph to where each child
puts up what their favorite apple was, making it a little easier to make comparisons between
their peers. I provided language so that they could label what they have observed about the
apples but I would like to have provided more, as well as, sharing the reasoning behind the
answers that were given to me (Epstein, 2007, p. 48).

Did your curriculum activity meet your stated objective? Support your answer with specific
examples from your observation of the childrens involvement in the activity.
The children participated in guessing the amount of seeds using their fingers and/or verbally
telling me the amount of seeds. When I showed the inside of the apple the children were
quick to count the seeds using there pointer finger to make sure they counted each one. They
were also able to tell me what the apples tasted like. For most of them they said the green
ones tasted sour. When it came to the other two colored apples, I got answers like they taste
sweet, they taste like strawberries, and they taste sweet but a little sour too. In this case, I was
able to, Provide materials with diverse sensory attributes and allow children sufficient time
and space to discover their properties. (Epstein, 2007, p. 48).

Based upon your informal assessment of the children during this activity, how would you
build upon this activity? What would be the next curriculum activity you would plan in this
area to enhance the childrens learning and why would you choose this next activity?
Like I said above, I would like to make the graph more accessible to the children and maybe
add more of a variety of fruits for them to taste. Next time I would like to have an activity
where they can experiment with materials that allow them to use all the senses. For example,
for one of my teacher in charge activities I wanted to make a pumpkin scented play dough
since my theme is pumpkins. This will allow me to extend on their child-guided
investigations, as I show interest in their findings and ask them open-ended questions
(Epstein, 2007, p. 63).
