Final Portfolio Essay
1. Process Work Artifacts
For these specific artifacts, I have chosen three of my drafts and brainstorming ideas that
I originally had for the second draft of the Literacy Narrative essay. Each artifact is located to the
bottom left of the page (excluding my brainstorming). To make things aesthetically pleasing, the
pictures at the top of the pages relate back to the papers. I didnt want the entire E-Portfolio to be
linear so I embedded many documents and put them beside one another. In terms of design, I
wanted to keep the website simple and not too flashy.
The Literacy Narrative was the easiest to write; however, it was difficult at the beginning
to make it the paper personal. For example, in the essay, I discussed performing with my
marching band. The paragraph was too brief. One of my peers suggested that I should explain
[my] actual experience performing. She wanted to know what was running through [my] head
while I was playing a solo. It further developed into another paragraph talking about the thrilling
rush of performing and hearing the masses of the crowd cheering. Also, I left a huge gap
within my story. Eventually, the deer story that I skipped over on the first page returned at the
end. The footnote a story for another time became a surprise. Overall, this was my best
example for a new format.
Humor was paramount to me in the Portrait of a Writer essay. Timing my punchlines
took a while to place. I didnt want to start off with too many so I gradually sprinkled them in. It

worked out for the best, and the pacing lined up where I wanted to be. In terms of a visual
representation, I compared my sisters poems to that of William Shakespeares stating that her
poems [were] in the same meter, too (iambic pentameter). She designed her poems in the
shape of trees. Unfortunately, I didnt have access to any of her works so I found a similar
formatted poem online and added to the end of the paper.
I didnt know where to start for my final portfolio essay and for that reason, this essay
was the hardest. To be candid, the first draft was done and one hour. I knew that I could add my
personality into the paper but not all of it, and being direct was the answer. Talking about
everything was difficult only because I had to go back and remember what I did.
One thing that I enjoy the most is brainstorming. Its challenging and rewarding at the
same time when you have epiphanies. For this Literacy Narrative brainstorm, it was done during
class and it was a vital step in order to write my second draft. Most of the elements were
highlighted in the paper. Brainstorming is the only planning that I do for papers.
2. Feedback Artifacts
Most of the feedback that I have received throughout all of my drafts and papers were
praised. Needless to say, they all werent perfect. It is important to have feedback that picks at
the small details and equally praises. By nature, the majority of student/ peer feedback praises
more than a teachers opinion. I selected my artifacts from both perspectives, the student and
teacher. Differentiating constructive criticism between the two was obvious. The criticism from
my peers was minimal, only asking for further explanation and to double check careless errors
that I overlooked. For example, in one of my Portrait of a Writer drafts, one of my peers stated
that the paper flowed and the paper had little sentence and grammar issues. Each paper had
their mistakes, but the more I wrote, the less apparent they became. My teacher did the same

thing as well but encouraged me to experiment with different techniques to push my comfort
zone. In addition, switching tenses in this essay was a problem. The advice that I was given was
to write in past tense for all of it. It feels more natural since [the story] happened in the past.
3. Notebook Artifacts
In Dan Mezlers Understanding Writing Assignments, the tip that stood out to me the most
was to pay close attention to how teachers evaluate assignments. It became a regular discussion
in the rest of my classes. Even though its frustrating to know that some of my professors dont
follow their rubric religiously but instead make-up things as they grade, its always a concern.
Mezler mentioned if the teacher [had not] provided you with a grading rubric or doesnt
mention how the assignment will be evaluated to ask questions. Also, Nathan Trimm discussed
writing with music. This stuck to me since I already implemented it with my writing process. It
is rather easy to write along to the beat of the music.
4. Wild Cards
I selected my reading and writing territories as one of my wild cars. Looking back on what I
read and wrote in high school was humbling. Even though this wasnt the full list of everything,
it was what I remembered at the time. The picture beside my list is the dos and donts of peer
review. Looking at other peoples papers in the past was a nightmare. I didnt know what was
acceptable. This was one of the most used documents throughout the semester. I referred back to
it several times throughout this year on all of the papers that my peers wrote.
..
My teacher and classmates pushed my comfort zone. I didnt like to be personal in my
writing, but as the semester carried on, I spoke out more in class, and my humor began to pay
off. After a while, it felt more natural. Also, I was tempted to experiment with different styles of

writing and formatting inspired by other people. Everyone wrote differently so why couldnt I? I
began playing around with switching my papers up and adding in unique spacing between certain
sections of my stories. I took each assignment seriously and all my work was completed on time,
if not, before. I started off at the beginning of the year knowing very little about writing in
college. I know I started this writing class with a B, and for that reason, I think I deserve an A in
the class. Its reasonable and shows my growth throughout the class. This essay might not be as
long as others. I cover each point in detail and move on to the next subject. If you went
underneath the surface, it displays my behavior as a writer and person: direct and brief.
