Abigail Rutz: Lesson Plan

Lesson Title & Big Idea*: My Buddy and Me/ Imagination

Grade Level*: 4th

Lesson Overview/Summary*:

Class Periods Required:

(please circle)

To start the lesson the class will be intruded to Leonardo Da Vinci; an artist, writer, inventor, etc. They will
learn about this man and incorporate this mindsets and ideas into their project for the week. For this lesson the big idea is imagination. In the lesson
the students will initially be told to create a Buddy. The Buddy they create will need to embody their inner-self. This meaning, their hidden
personalties or alter egos that they wish they could be. To create the Buddy, the student will write different facts about their inner-self; age,
appearance, likes, dislikes, family, job, etc. Once the student has a written version of their Buddy, in class the teacher will provide different art
materials to bring their Buddy to life. They can sculpt, paint, to be more like Da Vinci. Once their Buddy is created each student will introduce their
Buddy to the class. For a week the stunts will take their Buddy along with them throughout the day. To add a twist, their Buddy must face a different
problem each day at school. The Buddy must come up with ways to solve these issues with different inventions to help make their school a better
place. The Buddy will do everything the student does and go everywhere as well, so the student will need to take pictures of their Buddy in different
spots and also in spots where issues are evident. The students will also be required to keep a journal of the different adventures that their Buddy
goes on. The student will finally bring in the images they took and the class will put together a collage to hang in the room to display of all their
Buddys.

class will write a paper about their inner-self; appearance,
personality, hobbies, etc.
3.After the students has completed their paper in about 20 minutes,
the students will be given art supplies to sculpt, draw, paint their
new Buddy that represents their inner-self they imagined or had in
mind.
4. Once the students have created their Buddys, the instructor will
continue will directions for the lesson. The instructor will inform
that class that they will take their Buddy with them for an entire
week documenting in a journal the experience had together.
5. To add a twist to the project, the student will be told that their
Buddy must face at least one problem or issue at school during the
day that needs to be solved by inventions.
6.The students must recall from their science unit about inventions
and ideas of Da Vinci to solve problems to better their school. They
will record these inventions in their journals that they are to be
keeping during the week.
7. Throughout the week the students will have daily check-ins with
the instructor to make sure their journal is being written in, and
they the inventions are following the correct format.
8. During the week the students will also be asked to photograph
their Buddys at different places, or even the places where the
problems are faced.
9. Once the week is over, the students will have a journal filled with
inventions and experiences. The students will be allowed to share
their Buddy with the class and will be asked to describe one
invention, how it works, its purpose, and its relation to the great Da
Vinci.
10. To end the lesson, the students that took pictures of their
Buddies will bring them to class. The class as a whole will create a

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon?

!1. The students will know how to write story using a beginning, middle, and end.

2. The students will be able to keep a journal by referring to their writing notebooks.
3. The students will be able to write with proper grammar in logical order.
4. The students will have worked with all art mediums accessible to them for the creation of their Buddy.
5. The students will have prior knowledge in using contrast.
6. The students will know about inventions and cause and effect from their science unit.
7. Students will tie in knowledge of hypothesis when creating inventions for issues their Buddy faces.
How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson?

!1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Students will start the lesson be imagining and exploring their inner self. The students will create their Buddy based on their inner self
after imagining and deciding what their inner self would be like.
The students will also be experimenting for the science portion of the lesson. When the students are faced with challenges throughout
the day they must come up with inventions to solve those problems faced.
The students will also be exploring during the lesson with their Buddies. The students will take their Buddies with them wherever they
go and will exploring different places with their new creation.
This entire lesson will involve using their imagination. They are pretending that their Buddy is alive and facing different troubles. The
must use their imagination to bring their buddy to life, create different troublesome scenarios to solve, and also go on adventures.
The entirety of the lesson the students must use their imagination to write, create, and invent like Leonardo Da Vinci.

How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?

!-The first part of the lesson will challenge the students with digging deep and finding or exposing their inner self. They will have to divide

a plan to create their Buddy that represents their inner self. They will face the biggest challenges when their Buddy is addressed with
issues around school, home, and other random places. Such as; long lines, bad traffic, messy lockers, stained shirt, etc. The students will
have to think deeply and come up with different solutions and inventions to fix the problems faced to better their schools, like scientists do
for our world everyday.

How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning?

!Each day of the week the students will check in with the instructor on their progress with their Buddy. The students will be keeping a

journal of the adventures their buddy faces along with photographing the problems their Buddy faces. When the students check in, the
instructor will ask about the inventions the students are creating to solve the different issues their Buddy faces. The instructor will also ask
about the different relationships the students Buddy and him or her have or make. Their relationships can also be made when discussing
Buddys among students.

!

How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-abeled students?

!1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Each table will have different color mediums for easy access to all students.
Students will be able to use pre-cut shapes from different colored paper for those unable to cut.
Students unable to photograph their Buddys will be allowed to draw a sketch of the location the buddy is at.
For students unable to travel due to impairment, they will be given situations in which their Buddy and them must overcome and solve.
Most of the lesson is students driven however, so they will be able to approach the tasks in multiple ways.

What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work?

!The students will be allowed to add to or take away from their Buddys throughout the week to meet their artistic needs. They will be told

to act as Da Vinci and work at it, till it is at its utmost best. The students will also be having daily check-ins with the instructor to discuss
invention plans. Instructor will make sure students inventions are following criteria discussed in that particular science unit and will provide
students opportunity to improve their inventions before the week ends.
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson?

!The students throughout the week will be instructed to keep a journal of the inventions they create to overcome issues while also

documenting the different experiences their Buddy has. The students will turn this into the teacher. At the start of the project, the
students will be able to share their Buddy with the class. To conclude the project, the class will have a share day and will choose their
favorite invention or experience with their Buddy to share.
