Philosophy of Nursing
A. My Personal Philosophy of Nursing
1. Nursing: I believe the purpose of nursing is to acquire and apply our
knowledge of illnesses to better educate and promote healthy lifestyles.
Nursing is like the life cycle of a tree. The nurse is the farmer who
constantly watches the tree grow. The water provides the tree with life. If
the tree is not watered, the quality of life may decline.
2. Person: I believe the nurse cares for the patient until they are able to live
on their own again without assistance. The tree is the patient who is
constantly looked after by the farmer or nurse.
3. The environment plays a role in how the patient is able to recover. The
environment is the sunlight and the rain, which are factors that contribute
to the wellness of the tree.
4. Health requires looking at the patient holistically incorporating physical,
mental and spiritual health and if the three are in balance. Health is shown
when the tree looks well-nourished and no pollution is prohibiting its
growth.
B. Incorporation of Nursing Theories Into My Philosophy
1. Nursing: Nightingales goal was to place the individual in the best
condition for good healthcare (Selanders, 2012).

2. Person: Orems Self-Care Deficit Theory incorporated biopsychosocial

factors in which the being capable of self-care. Includes physical,
psychological, interpersonal and social aspects of human functioning.
3. Environment: Watsons Theory of Human Caring focused on social
environment, caring, and the culture of caring affect health.
4. Health: Neumanns Systems Model health of wellness exists if all parts
and subparts are in harmony with the whole person.
C. Qualities of Practice Environment
1. I plan to work in hospital surrounded by other nurses. I desire a fast-paced
environment in which the time seems to go by faster. I want to work in a hospital
whose mission and values are in balance with mine. The tree grows in a rural area
in which it is able to thrive and grow best.

Professional Outlook
A. Goals of My Own Nursing Practice
1. I value life-long learning to keep updated with new advances in technology that
become part of the nursing/healthcare field.
2. I want to use my higher education by applying my knowledge to myself and my
family and to be able to medically treat ourselves. I plan to further my education
my receiving a Masters degree and attending on-service seminars. I want to use
my new knowledge, research (Selanders, 2012), and education to create a
foundation for future generations of nurses.

Nursing Outlook Philosophy

3. Practice Goals: I want a stable occupation in which I can provide for my

family.
The goal of the farmer is for the tree to bear fruit. Even if the tree dies, the farmer
collects the seeds (knowledge of the patient) and can regrow for the generations to
come (or the spread of knowledge for future generations).
B. Challenges
1. Nursing Now: My personal challenge is to not let my values, morals, and
ethics interfere with those of a patients. This includes if their medical
decision is in conflict with my beliefs.
2. Nursing in the Future: New technologies are always coming to the healthcare
scene and it would be my job to keep up to date with the new trends.
The squirrels and insects act as obstacles that affect how the tree develops.
