Write equations to describe lines parallel or perpendicular to a given line.
Materials
Answer key to the 5.6 Homework Quiz, 5.6 Homework quiz redo worksheets, 5.8
exploration packet and answer key.

Procedures
Welcome! (5 Minutes)
Take the time to catch up on how the students weekends went. Give them time
to share their good news. After a few have shared I will pass out their previous
homework quizzes so that we can go over those first thing.
Going over their 5.6 Homework Quiz (10 Minutes)
Last Thursday they had a homework quiz over sections 5.6 from this chapter.
This is a very important section to this chapter and for the rest of the year in
Algebra 1. If they students are struggling to master this skill they will have even
more trouble the rest of the year. When I gave the students this homework quiz
last Friday, majority of the students didnt do very well on it. During this time in
class I am passing back those homework quizzes so that these students can
see where there mistakes were. Most of them were little mistakes but for those
that made big ones this will be a good time for them to get more instruction on
the material. I will give them a chance to ask any questions they might have.
From there we will move on to the homework quiz redo.
Homework quiz Redo (10 Minutes)
After we have gone over the previous homework quiz I am going to pass our
another one that is very similar to the original. This gives the students the

opportunity to practice fixing the mistakes they made previously. Once they are
done, they will turn it into the tray up front and wait patiently for everyone to
finish.
Lesson 5.8 Activity Packet (Rest of Class Period)
Once all the students have turned in their homework quiz I will move on to the
next activity. For lesson 5.8 the students will be working through a packet on
parallel and perpendicular lines. This packet will give them an opportunity to
work through the material and discover it on their own. They will also being
using and online graphing website, Desmos.com or Geogebra. They may use
either of those websites to check their graphs and answers in the packet. The
students will have the remaining time in class to work through this packet.
Before they are released to work on their own I will go through just one example
up on the Elmo. This way the students will know what the expectation is for the
packet and understand how the packet is presenting the information.
Assessment
My assessment of the students from this class period will come from their
homework quiz redos. Since the students have taken a quiz similar to this one,
grading these homework quizzes will be my check to see if this activity helped
them to learn from their mistakes previously or if I need to find another way to

reach them and help them understand the material better. This is a very crucial
lesson so it is important that I know how well the students are doing with the
material. Grading this homework quiz is my check to see where the students
are.
Reflection
Overall the students enjoyed the activity packet and understood the information
that it was trying to teach them. After I went over the homework quiz redos I
found that the students did improve from the previous homework quiz grade. I
look forward to seeing how the students will do when they need to apply the
information they discovered to a problem like they will see in the homework the
following day.
