Chapter 21 Sharing Ideas

11-3-14

1. In my ideal writing class, I would want it to be based on effort. In the beginning of

the class some essays will be incorrect in many aspects because students tend to
forget things if they do not practice it so their writing will be rusty. I will not base all
the points on participation because I know how some students are shy and dont
want to participate but are not lazy and do not do the assignments. I know this
because I myself am shy, if I do get put on the spot where I have to present in front
of the class because it will not go the way I want it to go. I also would not want to
grade an entire portfolio that counts for fifty percent of your grade. I would design a
rubric for each essay and many examples of what I am looking for because you can
explain an assignment to a student but some are visual learners and need to see it.
When grading papers I would base it on the rubric and not on what the highest
grade or best paper. Some students try very hard but are just not great writers.

2. I have always been a good writer in high school and when I would get a bad grade
on an essay I had the chance to bring up the grade with a test or other papers and
still get the grade I wanted. Until recently I have not been doing the best but I have
been trying. I also think, it has to do with the teacher. Each teacher has their own
way of writing and expectations as to what they want from the class.

3. Yes I have encountered the subjectivity-objectivity problem. In writing I think

there is now right or wrong way to write a paper. Like in math, there are multiple
ways to solve an equation and still get the right answer. Like I said it all depends on

how the teacher grades and what he/she looks for in a paper because one teacher
may think a paper is good while the other may think it wasnt good. As for the
analogy I do not think just one person should grade your paper, I think there should
be a second opinion but not seven because it would take to long.

5. I do think sometimes test such as the SAT or big final exams should not determine
if you pass of fail a class because many people get nervous and can black out and do
poorly. Earning good grades in school is to see if you can understand the material to
the ability that the teacher wants so you can move to the next grade.

7. That is the thing with writing, you do not know when it is good. Everyone has his
or her own opinion and expectations as to what is good or bad. Someone can find a
paper good and another can find the exact same paper horrible. I believe it all
depends on how well a person expresses himself or herself on paper.

9. I always tell myself a paper cannot be fully done. Students tend to be done with a
paper because the next day it is when it is due, but I think you can get many
different opinions and a paper can be changed into many other ways and people are
always developing new ideas that it cannot be just done.
