Annotated Bibliography
The short definition of what meningitis is, is a bacterial infection of the membranes
covering the brain and spinal cord known as meninges. I have chosen to write about meningitis
primarily because of how it has impacted my family and many families around the world.
Meningitis is a curable disease however, if not treated it can be deadly.
Throughout the research process and the creating of the concept map I have broken my
topic into three major areas. The first of the three areas explains what meningitis does and how it
affects the body and the systems in the body. The second theme of my project looks into the lives
of the family members of people with meningitis.. A prime example of this is when my mother
had meningitis our lives pretty much stopped. My father took time off of work and my sister and
I took leave from school. I had never seen someone so broken physically and emotionally. This
leads to my third theme which is to show how a person with meningitis is affected emotionally
and physically. Each one of my six sources fit into one of these three themes, each sources shows
how people are affected and that there is hope on the horizon. Meningitis is a disease that affects
physically affects people, it also changes the lives of families and takes the emotions of a person
and turns them inside out.
The following website gives an overview of what meningitis is. In addition the site
includes the three types of meningitis that people can contract. The website gives a detailed
account of the history of meningitis and how the disease metastasizes over a short period of time.
The rest of this article informs readers on what symptoms and conditions they should look out

for. The final portion of this article talks about what people can do to prevent contracting
meningitis and what to do when they contract it.

The following authors focus on the theme of what meningitis is and how it affects the body
physically.
The source breaks down the current pathophysiological concept of acute bacterial
meningitis and presents current treatment options. The source provides information on the
therapy of bacterial meningitis. In addition it list signs and symptoms that are commonly present
in cases of bacterial meningitis. This source also provides information on the other forms of
meningitis such as viral and fungal meningitis. I plan on frequenting this source often throughout
this project. It is a great tool that gives me a look into the disease of meningitis as a whole.

The following author speaks to the theme of how meningitis affects the body physically.
In this book the author breaks down the different kinds of meningitis and how the body
reacts to treatment. The source also provides information on how a family is supposed to cope
with when one of their loved ones has meningitis. These two sources both focus on the theme of
how meningitis affects a person physically. This source and the previous source do however
have some difference the one major difference that I found between the two sources was in
relation to ongoing side effects of meningitis. This source was truly intriguing in that it had

diagrams on what you are supposed to do when someone with meningitis has a negative reaction
such as a seizure.

The authors and researchers in the above study focus on the theme of how meningitis affects a
person emotionally.
In this article researchers studied 166 children who had meningitis at Royal Childrens
Hospital in Melbourne Australia. The researchers studied the emotionally and physical aspects of
these children. Through all of their research they came to the conclusion that children who have
had meningitis usually have mood swings, difficulty connecting with other children as well as
other emotional issues well after their meningitis has been cured.

and Behavioral Limitations and Health-Related Quality of Life in School-Age Survivors of
Bacterial Meningitis. Quality of Life Research, (6). 1563.
The authors in this journal discuss the emotional and psychological issues that are present in
children after they have meningitis. The journal relates to the theme of how patients are
emotionally affected after they have had meningitis. In addition it talks about what life is like for
children post meningitis. Meningitis is one of those diseases that we are all at risk of getting.
Once someone meningitis its not likely that the disease will return once that person is cured.

The researchers in this study look at the health related quality of life in postmeningetic
children as well as looking at the long term behavioral limitations of children who at one point
had meningitis. This study unlike the study done in the previous source breaks down the mental,
physical and emotional aspects of a child with meningitis and compares it to a child without
meningitis. This source will be very useful to me in my presentation. I plan on having a section
dedicated to the emotional affects meningitis has on children.

The author in this articles focuses on the theme of how families are affected when a loved one
has meningitis.
In this article the authors focused on the lives of parents who have children who had
meningitis. It focuses on the long term physiological distress in parents of child survivors of
severe meningococcal disease. The study looks into the lives of parents who have had to deal
with children who at one time had meningitis.

Communicating about health: current issues and perspectives (4th ed.). New

York: Oxford University Press.

The author in this source focuses on many aspects of health in our lives and in the world of
communication. However, for this project I focused primarily on chapter eight of the texts. The
title of this chapter is Social Support, Family Caregiving, and End of Life. In this section I
focused primarily on support and how supporting a person can make them better. I mostly

referenced pages 209-211 from this source. This chapter is related to the theme of how
meningitis affects families.
In this chapter the author talks about how there are different kinds of support and that there are
groups in place where people can share their feeling and relate their stories to those of other
people. This really stood out to me in that there are groups out there where families can talk
about how their loved ones were affected be meningitis. These support groups provide an outlet
where families of victims can seek out strength and support of others. This source is not very
similar to my other source however the information in it gave me a new outlook on how I can
help others cope with having someone in their lives who has had meningitis.
