Reflection on Inclusion

I believe that creating learning environment is an essential feature of classroom

practice. This importance is emphasized through KSA #7, which states: Teachers create
and maintain environments that are conductive to student learning and understand student
needs for physical, social, cultural and psychological security. In a classroom, students
will not be able to focus on learning or curriculum if they do not feel secure. With this in
mind, it is imperative that I create a learning environment in which students feel they are
safe to take risks and free to learn. I believe that the first step toward this learning
environment would be ensuring that I show care and concern towards each student. They
need to know that their teacher cares about them and their success before they can learn.
I think creating a learning environment also requires teachers to have an open
mindset to the students in their classrooms. I would keep an open mindset so that all of
my students know they are respected and that everyone has a place within the classroom.
This relates to KSA #8 that states: Teachers establish relationships with students that
respect human dignity. By keeping an open mindset, I will approach each student in a
welcoming manner and strive to enhance his or her strengths in the classroom. I would
also encourage all of my students to keep an open mindset toward each other. To
encourage this, I would spend time at the start of the school year allowing the students to
get to know one another and facilitating and designing activities for the class to do
together to build teamwork.
Another important step toward creating a safe and secure learning environment is
establishing classroom rules and routines that allow for predictability during the day.
These rules and routines allow for students to be assured that there are universally

followed rules within the classroom that allow for everyone to succeed and feel safe. This
knowledge provides stability to students that will allow them to focus on their learning. I
would establish these routines and rules at the start of the school year by collaborating
with my class to create rules, and practicing routines so that students can perform them
with ease throughout the year.
I also believe it is important to make the classroom learner-centered in order to
create an inclusive learning environment. I think a learner-centered classroom can only
occur when a teacher knows his or her students learning needs and differences well. A
strategy I could use to help assess these needs and differences could be to create learning
profiles. Along with this, I could also assess my students differing readiness levels as
well as interests. These assessments will allow me to drive my students learning in a
direction so that their individual needs are addressed and so that they are challenged
appropriately in the classroom. This process relates to KSA #5, which states: Teachers
identify and respond to learner differences. Responding to these differences requires that
I create a learning environment that is flexible in order to maximize students various
strengths and work with their various weaknesses.
I would create a learning environment that is flexible through the use of multiple
forms of differentiation and instructional strategies. This relates to KSA #9 that states:
Teachers use a broad range of instructional strategies. For example, I would develop
anchor activities that complement students readiness levels and/or interests. These are
activities related to the curriculum that students work on independently when they are
finished with their regular classroom work or when they are waiting for help when stuck.
They provide direction for students during ragged time in the day, furthering their

learning. I may also implement tiered assignments so that students can achieve a learning
objective at the appropriate challenge level.
Another aspect of differentiation I want to include to create learning environment
is appropriate technology. Technology can be a very effective tool for differentiation
when used properly. I would especially take advantage of the accessibility features and
applications many technologies have in order to engage all of my students no matter what
level of readiness they may be at or what learner difference they may have. Integrating
technology in my classroom relates to KSA #10 that states: Teachers apply a variety of
technologies to meet students learning needs.
Creating a learning environment also requires cooperation with parents. KSA #12
states: Teachers engage parents, purposefully and meaningfully, in all aspects of
teaching and learning. Information and communication from parents is another key to
further understanding what works for a certain learner. By listening to what a parent has
to stay about their child, and sharing what I have observed about their child, we can
together create a learning environment that works for that childs unique needs and
differences.
Overall, creating a learning environment is all about collaboration between
teachers, students, and parents. A learning environment is successful when students
various learning needs and differences are identified and addressed with multiple
different strategies within the classroom.
