Weight Training Lesson Reflection

10th Grade
The weight training lesson for 10th grade places emphasis upon giving
students the knowledge, skill, and freedom to design and engage in their own weight
lifting program. To help keep students engaged in their program, the lesson
introduces the use of the Badges program, an online rewards based program that
allows students to unlock various badges based on their achievements. When
incorporating the Badges program, the instructor(s) demonstrate how the program
works using a technology cart and provide students with the directions for how to
access the website and view their progress toward various badges. After the
introduction, students are shown a sheet that highlights each muscle group of the
body that will be worked on during the unit, and it is explained to students that they
are to base their program goals toward each muscle group. It is also explained that
their individual program goals must take into account the lifting pre-test they
completed in the previous class period. Once checking for understanding on
questions concerning the weight training programs, students begin working
individually or with small groups in order to begin creating their individual weighttraining programs, starting with their program goals. After students have completed
their program goals they will have the goals approved by an instructor before then
continue to advance the programs specific daily challenges. After everyone has had
their goals approved, the instructor pauses the class and engages in a classroom
discussion of the type of goals that various students are attempting to accomplish.
Lastly, the instructor informs students that their whole class is in competition
against the other physical education classes in the school. The class that makes the
greatest advances in fitness improvement (based on percentage of improvement not
by literally amount of pounds lifted) will receive free week passes to the local
athletic club. Therefore, the class needs to support each other and work together in
order to continuously improve themselves more then other classes in the school.
Students are asked for what questions they have concerning the competition and
are told that they will begin their weight training plans in the following lesson.
From observing the students and reflecting upon our lesson instruction,
feedback indicates that the lesson does well in giving students ownership over their
learning through the creation and participation in individual fitness plans. Through
observation, it appeared that students were comfortable creating their own plan,
and very excited to be competing against other classes. Some students informed us
that they were happy to have the opportunity to create their own plan and work in
cooperation with their peers toward improving their whole class. There was some
concern voiced by our own peers about whether students would attempt to cheat
by having easily obtainable program goals, however after some discussion it was
decided that the focus on the competition being based on percentage of
improvement would temper the desire to have low goals.
Based on this feedback and observation, the primary area identified for
needing improvement revolves around ensuring that regular formative assessments
take place to ensure student progress is taking place. This is a simple modification to

put into place as long as there are guidelines outlining which incorporate proof of
improvement for each muscle group outlined in the lesson. Our strengths appear to
lay in areas of student ownership and motivation toward achieving their personal
learning goals. In general, our peers agreed that the individualized programs and
class versus class competition will help to motivate intrinsically motivate students
toward self-improvement.
In the future, we hope to take into consideration the feedback and
observation from this lesson in order to provide a more detailed outline of the
formative and summative assessments that would be used to assess student
progress over the course of the unit. Our primary goal in the future would be to
accurately assess student progress (perhaps through the Badges program) in order
to display student growth and self-improvement. Our hope is that with regular,
practical formative assessments we will be able to better help students achieve the
goals that they set for themselves.
