Subject: Algebra 1 7.1 Part C OBJECTIVE: The Algebra 1 students will learn how to solve equations involving absolute values symbolically and graphically and will be able to make a connection between absolute value functions and equations based on the examples from section 7.1 of chapter 7 in their textbook on pages 464-467. COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS: HAS-REI.A.1: Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities: understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning. HAS-REI.D.11: Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities: represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically. MATERIALS: Pencil or pen Textbook Visualizer Notebook or Lined Paper Graph Paper PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Students have prior knowledge of absolute values. Students are familiar with how to solve equations. Students learned in the previous lesson how to graph absolute value functions. LESSON OVERVIEW: This lesson will follow the lessons on Absolute Values and Graphing Absolute Value Functions. It will be modeled fairly similar to the first lesson on Absolute Values but instead we will begin with a warm up activity. We will then move into our class discussion while we take notes and then we will close with an activity for guided practice. In this lesson, students will make connections between the previous section where they graphed absolute value functions and this section where they will be learning about absolute value equations and how to solve them. They will be solving the absolute value equations in two different ways, symbolically and graphically. This lesson will be followed by a homework assignment that includes exercises from part C of section 7-1 and if there is time left over, the students may begin on their homework before class is finished.
