Proposal
Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation:
Cholangiocarcinoma is a cancer that starts in the bile duct which is a thin tube about 4 to 5
inches long that reaches from the liver to the small intestine. The major function of the bile duct
is to move bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine, where it helps digest the fats
in foods. Cholangiocarcinoma is often labeled a silent disease because many of the symptoms go
unnoticed until the cancer has become too advanced. The best way of removing the cancer is to
perform surgery in its early stages, but instead if it reaches an advanced stage, ultimately
nothing can be done.
It was devastating to Mark Clements and his family when he was diagnosed with
Cholangiocarcinoma in October of 2005. Mark and his wife Marianne were expecting their
fourth child and did not want to loose a key member in their family. Frantically, the family began
researching possible options only to discover that nothing could be done. Mark passed in 2007
leaving family, friends, and a bright future behind, he was only 41 years old. The
Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation was created shortly after and managed by others who have or
who are currently suffering from the effects of this deadly disease. It is the Foundations hope and
vision to one day find a cure, in the meanwhile supporting families and patients that are currently
dealing with its devastating effects.
As a group we are volunteering to contribute newsletters, press releases, and public advertising.
We will be helping to gain more support and to educate others on the effects and current
problems associated with Cholangiocarcinoma.

Background on the problem or need:

The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation strives to provide the values described in the
acronym CURE: Collaboration, Understanding, Research, and Education- for those directly
affected, their families, and the community. Ultimately, it aims to find the cure for
cholangiocarcinoma, while fostering an environment of support and increasing awareness.
As its awareness continues to grow, this deadly disease is relatively new and the its lack
of education continues to persist, Talking about cholangiocarcinoma can be a very
uncomfortable conversation for the affected person, peers, and loved ones.
The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation needs of our assistance to continue its advocacy for
this illness and its education. Through our writing contributions, we want to continue to raise
awareness through accessible methods such as the internet and social media. We look forward in
providing accurate information in an easy-to-understand manner and educate ourselves and our
community about this disease.

Description, goals and objective:

The cardinal objective of this project is to help the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation with its
writing needs in a variety of sectors. This project will promote publicity and knowledge
worldwide of this organization by researching and designing press releases, creating a volunteer
toolkit and promote their commercial which is to be released February 2015. The group will be
responsible for writing and some distribution of two webinar press releases. For each of the
webinars we will create a brief synopsis of the event, a press release and a marketing plan
template. A volunteer toolkit will also be produced to educate new volunteers about volunteer
possibilities and the foundation's values. Our objective is to further the knowledge of
Cholangiocarcinoma by utilizing social media and to create a volunteer toolkit for those within
this organization.

Methods section or plan:

Prior to beginning our work with the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, group members will
research the organization and attend online webinars to gain more knowledge on the company
and the guidelines for the documentation we will be creating. Group members will be meeting
with Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation on a biweekly basis. The length of each visit will be
approximately one to two hours depending on the activity for that day. Members of the group
will be divided into the following areas: fundraising volunteer, grant writer, patient advocate
volunteer, public policy advocate volunteer and public relations volunteer.
