Pre-K3

Olivia Graff
Schedule:
8:00-8:15am- Students arrive
As the students arrive, we will unpack bags and they will check in. To check in, they will find
their name on the whiteboard and drop their name person into the basket below the easel. Name
recognition is important and something that we are working on the first half of the year.
One student, Garrett, came up to me the other day and noticed that our names had similar letters.
I would want to share this observation and connection with the whole class.
Garrett: Ms. Graff, the first letter of your name is the same as the first letter of my name.
Teacher: Garrett, youre right! They both start with the letter g!
Garrett: G in Garrett, /g/, and g in Graff, /g/. They make the same sound!
Teacher: Who elses name starts with that same letter?
Students: Graces name starts with g! So does Gina!
The students recognized names, were able to see similar letters, and make connections between
them based on letter recognition and phonemic awareness.
Standards:
LD 5g. Identifies some individual letters of the alphabet
8:15-9:00am- Leaf Man and Activity
Once all the students arrive and get settled, the teacher will
introduce the book Leaf Man and the children will have a chance
to do a picture walk with the book. As they observe the
illustrations, the students will quietly look at them and be asked at
the end to make their prediction about the book. They will then
take the time to talk about the leaves they collected the day before.
Reviewing colors, shapes, and places they found the leaves will
encourage the kids to think about the story in their real life. They
will be making text-to-self connections and text-to-world
connections. The teacher will then read the book aloud, stopping to
point out leaves and their shapes, vocabulary, and summarizing up
to that point. Once the story is over, they will retell the story
together. Afterwards, they will work on their leaf man, by using
the leaves they collected to create their own leaf man.
Standards:
LD 1. Children will develop skills in listening for the purpose of comprehension.
LD 1b. Responds to questions.
LD 1d. Listens to stories read aloud and shows understanding through body language or by

interacting appropriately.
LD 1f. Makes predictions from pictures and titles.
LD 4. Children will develop and expand expressive language skills (speaking).
LD 4b. Engages in conversations with adults and children
LD 5. Children will begin to develop age-appropriate strategies that will assist in reading.
LD 5b. Discusses books or stories read aloud.
LD 5j. Connects information and events in books to real-life experiences.

9:00-9:15am- Calendar time

The teacher will then move to the front of the classroom for circle/calendar time. He/she will
hold up each students name and the student will have to quietly walk to their place on the carpet.
Recognizing the students name, like earlier, is important for these children to master at this age.
Once they are all sitting, the will go through math related calendar concepts. The teacher will
also have the students read the name of the month, sing the days of the week and the months of
the year, and then recognize what day it is. The students all collectively say the names of each of
these, modeling fluency and phonemic awareness for the letters in these common words.
Teacher: What month is it?
Students: October!
Teacher: How many months are in a year?
All: There are TWELVE MONTHS IN A YEAR (this is chanted loudly).
Teacher: Lets sing them! January, February, March, April, etc.
Teacher: What day is it?
Students: Tuesday!
Teacher: How many days are in a week?
All: There are SEVEN DAYS IN A WEEK (also chanted loudly).
Teacher: Lets sing them!
All: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc
The teacher models fluency and phonemic awareness when she has the students repeat these
words and sing along to their songs.
Standards:
LD 2. Children will learn to discriminate the sounds of language (phonological awareness).
LD 2b. Repeats rhymes, poems and finger plays

9:15-9:45am- Station 1
The students will then break into small groups and travel around to various stations. This station
will include recognizing letters and their names. Most students do not recognize all their letters
yet but can recognize a few, usually the ones in their name. Flash cards with letters on them as
well as a matching picture will be on the table. As a group of 4, they will try to recognize and say
as many as they can. They will then color a coloring sheet with the letter of the week on it. The
letter of the week is O and the students will color a picture of October and pumpkins. The sheet

will have the word October written largely on top. The teacher will go over that word and ask
students what letters they see in October.
Students should first and foremost recognize the letter O. Other letters they might recognize
are letters in their names. Hopefully, with 3-4 students at each table, they will be able to
recognize all of the letters in the word. The practice with letter recognition we just did should
also help them notice letters and readily recognize and say them.

Standards:
LD 5. Children will begin to develop age-appropriate strategies that will assist in reading.
LD 5g. Identifies some individual letters of the alphabet

9:45-10:15am- Station 2
Another station will be filled with picture books and short stories about fall. The students will
have a chance to look through the pages and admire the illustrations. They will be encouraged to
make up their own stories to go along with the illustrations. The teacher will ask each student to
share their stories and why they think that they go with the pictures. The students will make textto-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections when they create their own stories. These
stories will be shared aloud with the other students, giving them a chance to orally communicate
thoughts and other students the chance to listen to oral stories.
Possible questions to ask:
What kind of story did you come up with for your book?
What did the pictures tell you?

What was your favorite picture?

How did you know what was happening?
Standards:
LD 1f. Makes predictions from pictures and titles.
LD 4. Children will develop and expand expressive language skills (speaking).
LD 4b. Engages in conversations with adults and children.
LD 5j. Connects information and events in books to real-life experiences.

The other two stations will not necessarily be reading related. They will last from 10:15-10:45
and 10:45-11:15. After that will be recess and then a final activity before lunch breaks.
