Lesson Title & Big Idea: Paper Sculptures
The big idea of this lesson is abstract art.

Grade Level /Month:

2nd grade / November

Lesson Overview/Summary:
With cutting and gluing supplies, students will create a 3D sculpture. Creating different lengths will give multiple
perspectives in the sculptures.

Class Periods Required:

One

Key Concept (s):

Students will understand abstract composition and be able to construct
sculptures that help them understand this.

Essential Questions (Found on the national visual arts standards chart):

How do artists work? How do artists and designers determine whether a
particular direction in their work is effective? How do artists and designers
learn from trial and error?
What role does persistence play in revising, refining, and developing work?
How do artists grow and become accomplished in art forms? How does
collaboratively reflecting on a work help us experience it more completely?

Art Standards:

Demonstrate safe procedures for using and cleaning art tools, equipment, and
studio spaces.
Appendix F: Modeling in K2 builds on prior experiences and progresses to include using and developing
models (i.e., diagram, drawing, physical replica, diorama, dramatization, or storyboard) that represent

concrete events or design solutions.

Discuss and reflect with peers about choices made in creating artwork.

Content Areas Integrated:
1. Art for arts sake.
2. Science

Identify & define common vocabulary/concepts that connect the art form
with the other identified subject area(s):
1. Sculpture
2. 3D

Procedure
1. After discussing sculpture to the students, explain how they will be
making their own sculptures.
2. Provide students a paper bag, or piece of cardboard, that they will use
to glue construction paper on.
3. Allow students to choose color of paper they want to use on their
sculptures.
4. As students get their paper, instruct them the best way to get the
construction paper to stick. If you glue the end of the paper after
rolling it, the paper will stick a lot easier.
5. Tell students when gluing the paper to the background, sing the abcs
two times while holding the paper in place.
6. Allow students to make different shapes and different sizes of
construction paper to glue down.
7. Students will work.
8. Start clean up.
9. Recycle all usable construction paper.
10. Finish clean up.
What prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon?
1. Cutting
2. Gluing
3. Definition of sculptures and where they come from

Procedure Continued:

What activities will you use to engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson?
1. Students will have the choice to create their own, unique design
2. Students will explore and experiment the best way the sculpture will be put together
3. As students become comfortable with the making of the sculpture, they will be able to create different shapes and sizes of the construction paper

Lesson Plan Template 3

How will this lesson encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
1. Students will need to solve ways that the paper will stick through experimentation
2. Students can add their own kind of detail to their sculpture
What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise/reflect and improve their understandings and their work?
1. As students are able to get the sculpture to be formed, they can revise where they put the construction paper to create the image they want
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning/understanding/work in this lesson?
1. If a student is struggling, the student next to them may have found a way that is effective to creating the sculpture
2. Students will be asked to share ways that work for them for the whole class as the teacher notices these findings
How will you adapt the various aspects of this lesson to differently-abled students?
1. Students will be given the opportunity to work with a partner if they want this option
2. Students will be given glue that is easier to stick to the paper and the background paper
