Science 8: The Edible Cell Project

Assignment
Design and build a three-dimensional model of a cell that features the organelles listed
below.
Materials
Everyday food items of your choice (eg. Jello, hard candies, dried pasta, licorice, etc.)
Specifications
- Your edible cell may be either a plant cell or an animal cell
- You may work on your own or in pairs
- The organelles listed below MUST be present
- Your model cell must contain all the right parts in the right proportions, and the
parts must be clearly visible. It should be about the size of a shoebox or a
Frisbee.
- Provide a full-page labeled diagram of your edible cell on a blank white sheet of
paper (8 x 11). Make sure you include and label all of the organelles and
include the function of each organelle.
- Provide answers to the self-assessment questions.
- Have fun and be creative!
Evaluation
Edible Cell Rubric
All cell organelles are included

Science 8: The Power Point Cell Project

Assignment
Design and build a power point presentation that features and describes the organelles of a
plant or animal cell.
Specifications
- You may choose either a plant cell or an animal cell
- You may work on your own or in pairs
- The organelles listed below MUST be present
- Each organelle needs to be highlighted individually (labeled)
- Each organelle must have a description of:
o What function the organelle performs in the cell
o The general location of the organelle in the cell
- Provide answers to the self-assessment questions.
- Have fun and be creative!

Science 8: The Cell as a School Cell Project

Assignment
Compare a eukaryotic cell to a school.
Specifications
- You may choose from the following options to make the comparisons:
- Create a mini model of our school that shows how the parts of the school operate
like the parts of the cell. Include a diagram that specifies the comparisons of the
cell organelle, including its function. choose either a plant or an animal cell
- Make a brochure for science that could help a 5th grader understand the
similarities between the organelles of a cell and the parts of the school. Make
sure to include information and colors that will make it interesting to read.
- Make a poster-sized drawing of a eukaryotic cell and label the parts of the cell as
the parts of a school. For example, the nucleus would be labeled as a part of the
school instead of a nucleus. Describe how and why the structures of the cell
and the school have similar functions.
- Create and perform a song or musical comparing organelles to the parts of a
school.
- Provide answers to the self-assessment questions.
- Have fun and be creative!
