Dave Weathers Interview by Jill Troc

1. How and when was the BCM founded on this campus?

a. It started in 1931, it was when one student heard about it staring at EKU, about
five years previous, she really wanted to get it started at UK so she started talking
to pastors in the area and kept on banging and banging until eventually one of
them volunteered for it and was able to start the organization here.
2. How did you first get involved at the BCM?
a. I started my freshman year during K week the BCM has the Taste of Church
where they bring you around to different churches and I really didnt want to get
involved in a campus organization I just wanted to get into a church so I thought it
was a good opportunity to go around and see different ones in the area. I ended up
meeting some people in the BCM at the taste of the church really saw that they
were interested in me and thought it was a really cool place.
3. How would student get involved in your organization?
a. We have meetings twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday, easiest way to get
involved is to come to one of those, most people find out through friends inviting
them or commercial things on campus. Sometimes our website or even with K
week, like how I got involved.
4. How does the BCM benefit students on campus?
a. It does a really good job with connecting them with local church, we are not a
church, and we just point students to other churches in the area. Benefit them
spiritually through that and additionally its a really good opportunity for people
to find Christian friends and to really grow.
5. How many members are currently involved?
a. About 140-150 total, it varies week by week with different events.
6. How many are freshman?
a. About 30, 35.
7. Can you describe the influence you have had on members?
a. We have leadership positions and with those positions I have been a worship
leader and this year Im the president. Throughout the years Ive gotten to
opportunities to invest in people and get to know them and lead them in worship.
In addition to that we have Adopt a Freshman and with that the upperclassmen get
set up with a freshman and helping them week by week. Its sort of like a big/little
with sororities or fraternities and invest in them and care about them and be their
friend.
8. Are you still involved with adopt a freshman even though you are the president
a. Not this year, no.
9. How have members made and influence on you/
a. Its had a huge impact on me especially when I was a freshman, having the
upperclassmen influence me and make me feel good there, helps me realize what
it really means to follow Christ.
10. How has the BCM shaped you as a person?
a. Been an opportunity to grow in my faith and closer to Christ its challenged me to
talk to people who dont have a relationship with Christ and Im trying to find the

right wordsum not to push it on them but show them who I am and if theyre
interested and walk them through it.
11. What are your core values?
a. Really depends on what Jesus does in the gospels about loving god completely
and loving others so its really those two things that we at the BCM try to reflect
like giving god up for everything and pointing others towards him
12. How do your values compare to those at the BCM?
a. Id say they align pretty well, obviously theres some churches that feed into the
BCM so threes a community in it but there are some disagreements people will
have with it just minor things but its not enough to steer me away from the BCM.
13. What are your main goals to achieve through this organization?
a. Really goes back to values of loving god, loving others and pointing them back to
a local church
14. What different events or activities are planned during the week?
a. We have elevate on Tuesday night which is our worship night where well have a
couple worship songs everybody sings along and then a message given usually by
our campus minister, John, Barron or sometimes the local pastors will come in
and preach. And then on Thursday nights for freshman we have whats called
freshman focus, this is an opportunity for freshman to get to know each other and
grow as a class and they do bible studies and games other things during that time.
And then the upperclassmen have whats called family groups and its about five
or seven people per group and study Gods word and kind of hold each other
accountable for living and kind of an open forum to talk about whatever were
going through.
15. How does freshman focus differ from the upperclassmen small groups?
a. Its kind of the freshman are all together, guy and girls, theres about 30 of them in
there and theres about 4 upperclassmen leaders who spend a lot of time investing
in them and with family groups its all sophomores through seniors its more of a
group thing where everybodys trying to invest in another person theres a group
leader for every group.
16. What different activities re planned during the year?
a. We have different things, one is fall retreat. This years in September, itll be a
weekend trip to a local comradery were we have worship and special guest
speaker and then a bunch of free time where students can really get to know each
other. Thats the main none in the fall and then on a monthly basis we have
Thursday night live last Thursday of every month. Its like a knock off of
Saturday Night Live, where we have skits and then about 2 or 3 cover songs our
band does and its supposed to be a fun event where students who wouldnt feel
comfortable coming to worship service can come and then see what the BCM is
about and see that were normal people and then hear about the stuff going on that
we do.
17. How is the BCM different from other organizations such as CSF?

Dave Weathers Interview by Jill Troc

a. I think were a bit smaller but our goal is more to invest directly into the people,
Im not saying CSF doesnt do this but we make people feel welcome and that
they belong here and feel a part of the community and theyre developing
relationship where they can feel that its real.
18. Do you go on mission trips?
a. Yes we have usually 2 or 3 trips every spring break the freshman have their own
one called road rules, its a really cool trip, definitely one of the highlights of my
college career. All the freshman sign up but none of them know where they are
going except the leaders and so they pack into a bus and start driving. They give
them some clues and try to figure out where theyre going but usually dont and
show up in some random city and do some mission work there. And then have
time together just on the bus and understanding and develop relationships. For
upperclassmen we have in country trip for example weve gone to new York and
last year we went to Detroit where we more focused on doing more of the mission
work and getting along with the people and ensuring that gospel an occasionally
we have an out of country trip. Weve gone to Guatemala and done a lot of
helping out local organizations or construction.
19. Is that only once a year?
a. Yeah, just once a year.
20. How do these trips affect you?
a. Theyve really had a big impact, just seeing the different perspective and thinking
about it here really convicts me like Im not doing that much back here at UK and
so once I get back Im really about sharing the gospel and living out my faith in
god.
21. How does the Baptist religion compare to other religions such as Catholicism?
a. We focus a lot more on love and truth as compared to Catholicism a lot of it is
tradition and how it works we see that doing the work of Christ is going save us
not anything we can do though that we our words are our response to god not
actually gets us through.
22. How has the BCM grown as a community?
a. It kind of like a periodic thing, you know people go through and graduate so its
more of how those students develop while theyre in the BCM, the BCM itself
obviously hasnt grown so its more of how the students go through and its also
how a lot of change coming into college and how were apart of Christ by the time
we graduate.
23. How does your class grow throughout the years together at the BCM?
a. Its kind of a week by week basis at these events and going on trips together and
hanging out together on the weekends you know developing each relationship
where it builds opportunities to build one another really and so we grow by one
calling of Christ and by growing each other
24. Do you see anything changing in the future or wish to improve anything?
a. Yeah, our new campus minister, John Barron, its actually his first year here he
actually has really big plans for the BCM in the upcoming years it would take a

while but we really want to expand our presence on campus we can get a bigger
organization with more staff members so we can have a bigger impact and also
we really want to get involved in sororities and fraternities. Going and talking to
those people in those organizations so we can exist in them.
25. Do you know how youre going to expand in the future or is it just an idea?
a. There are plans john would probably be able to give you more straightforward
answers.
