Goal of Lesson:
CCSS: Math: Measurement & Data K.MD
Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category.
3. Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories
by count.
Objectives: Students will be able to graph the likes of five different types of apples. Together with a group and as
individuals.
Pre-Assessment: During morning meeting Teacher will make a graph on which five senses they like the most.
Post-Assessment: Have children give data on the graph they have finished
Materials:
Five different types of apples: (each slice into four pieces)
Delicious Red
Granny Smith
Gala Apple
Golden Delicious
Fuji
Plates
3 Charts (pre titled, with the apples and the childs name, four child to a chart)
Markers
Stickers
Pictures of apples labels
Labels on plate of the apple
Use of Technology: N/A
Differentiation:
UP: (Table 1) Child will graph by themselves and write answer to the question.
ACROSS: (Table 2) Child will graph by themselves and answer the question with assistance from the assistant teacher if
needed. (sample of chart will be provided)
DOWN: (Table 3)
1) Child will graph by themselves and answer the question with assistance from the assistant teacher if needed.
(Sample of chart will be provided).
2) Stickers will be provide for those children that do not want to use a marker to mark their answers.
3) If needed, one chart will be used for the whole table to use.
(DOWN) Variation depends on cooperation of the students at table number 3
Lesson Presentation:
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
1. Introduction to lesson (5 minutes)
Teacher will outline math lesson for today.
Good morning class today we will be creating our own chart on what apples we like the most. Before we go and
create our apple charts let me read to you a fascinating book on the Called Johnny Appleseed
2. Read the book, Johnny Appleseed (10 minutes)
Questions will vary depending on cooperation and classroom dynamics
3. Brain break (needed to keep focus and on task) (2 minutes)
4. Explain instructions for the math graphing activity, show book and send children to their assigned table. (3 minutes)
Guided Practice/Active Involvement/Small group work/Independent Practice:
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
The children will taste each of the five apples that are provided to them. Then they will mark on their own graph chart
what apples each of the peers at their table liked. Using the materials on table and assistance of teachers assigned to
table if needed.
When independent work is done, children will transition back to rug.
(A song will be use to transition to the rug.)
It is time to go to the rug, to the rug, to the rug
It is time to go to the rug and share what we learn.
***Those that need transition time will be given a countdown verbally and visually using a 5 minute hour glass than a 1
minute hour glass)***
Final Summary/Closure:
Estimated Time:10
Today you were mathematician and we graphed which one were our favorite apples.
Give each child a chance to share. Teacher will ask each group Which apple was the most favorite by the group and
which apple was the least favorite of the group.
Teacher will ensure to those that did not finish that time will be allotted later for completion.
Announce to the children that next week we will have a Graphing display gathering for their family and school members.
Extension:
1. Send letter home to parents to discuss topic of the senses.
2. Invite the parents for the Graphing display gathering.
3. Send supporting activity book home to continue exploration
