Decoding words
using word
patterns and
word families.
EOL Assessment
I will use a check list
to assess the
student based on if
she can identify a
give word pattern
and make word
families using the
pattern. The
checklist will
determine if the
student can first
identify a word
pattern within a
word, and associate
words that belong
as a word family.
Procedures:
1. I do
Today we are going to work with word patterns. When you come to a word you do not
know, you can use a word pattern to help you decode the word and read it.
2. We do
We will use the magnetic letters and white board to create words using a word pattern.
We will start with the word can. Lets read this word together- can. The letters -an
make this sound -an.
Now we will place the letter m in front of an. If c-a-n spells can what do you think
m-a-n spells? Man and can sound alike. What did we change to make can into man?
The an sound stays the same.
Lets look at the word sit. Lets read this word together sit. The letters -it make
this sound it.
Now we will place the letter f in front of it. If s-i-t spells sit what do you think f-i-t
spells? Sit and fit sound alike. What did we change to make sit into fit? The it sound
stays the same.
3. You do
Now that you know the an sound in can and man use this pattern to make more
words. Read aloud each word you make.
