Course Description
Students will be introduced to basic principles and applications of healthcare finance that are
most important to entry-level operational managers. Some managers will be learning this
information for the first time. They will need to understand these finance principles that they
will encounter and work with on a daily basis for their department in a healthcare facility or
medical practice setting. This course covers the fundamentals of healthcare finance with a
concentration on operational management. Powerpoint slides are also provided to expand on the
essential material in each chapter. Case study exercises will also be used and incorporated into
the course. End-of-chapter exercises are also utilized to encourage students to apply what they
have learned using case studies.

Course Objectives
Explain the fundamentals of healthcare finance.
Define the fundamental concepts.
Explain healthcare business basics.
The planning, managing and control of healthcare organizations is reviewed and
explained in detail.
How healthcare operations is reported and the accounting for healthcare operations is
explained.

Evaluation and Grading


Evaluation is directly related to the performance objectives.
Performance is measured by examination, assignments, and/or quizzes.
The letter grade is based on the percentage of the total points earned throughout the
semester based on the following scale:
A = 90 to 100%
B = 83 to 89%
C = 77 to 82%
D = 70 to 76%
F = 69% and below
Seventy percent (70%) of the final grade is based on chapter tests that evaluates knowledge of
the text information. Examinations are scheduled in advance. To qualify for the total points on
the examinations, the student must take the examination at the scheduled time. Five points will
be deducted from each examination if not taken at the scheduled time. Any examination not
taken at the scheduled time must be pre-approved by the instructor and taken before the next
class period.
Twenty percent (20%) of the final grade is based on the homework, outside assignments,
and/or quizzes. Assignments are scheduled in advance. To qualify for the total points on the
assignment,
the student must submit the completed assignment at the scheduled time. Quizzes are not
scheduled in advance and cannot be made up. No points are awarded for missed quizzes.
Ten percent (10%) for attendance.
