Mrs.

Muntons High School Biology Class Policies

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. It is my goal this year to help you learn to be passionate
about the world you live in. My desire for you this year is that you will learn to love the world of
science and that it will be a class you love attending. We have much to cover this year, but I
believe you will find the activities and curriculum to be challenging, engaging, and exciting. I firmly
believe science can be fun and I hope that as we go through this year together you will discover
this for yourselves. As you will find below I have listed my expectations for this class.
Classroom Rules:
1. Be on time
2. Be respectful
3. Stay on Task
4. Be prepared
5. Keep an open mind

Lab Rules:
1. Follow instructions
2. Use proper safety equipment
3. Clean lab bench area before leaving
4. Return materials to proper place
6. Immediately notify teacher of
broken glassware or equipment

* Class and labs absolutely no food or drink allowed (per school policy)*
If any of these rules are broken the following consequences will be implemented. If there have
been multiple offenses I may utilize a more severe consequences until the behavior is corrected.
Consequences for inappropriate behavior:
1. Refocus
2. Written statements with parent signature.
3. Detention with parent signature.
4. Referral to the office for further consequences (may include class suspension).
Grading Policy:
Grades will be assigned using the following grading scale:
100-90% = A
89-80% = B
79-70% = C
69-60% = D
59-0% + F Grades are not rounded.
Assignments:
Assignments will be broken up using the following scale: Homework and Class work = 15%, Tests
and Quizzes = 30%, Lab Activities = 40% and Participation = 15%.
Website:
The class website will be updated every week and will contain the handouts and assignments for
the week. I will post grades here and they will be available for students and parents. You can find
my website on the school homepage under the parent resources tab.

Materials Required for Class and Labs:

Pens and Pencils (mechanical are fine)
Ruler
Calculator
Colored Pencils
Lab Notebook
****If for some reason you are having troubles collecting these items please see me and we will
work on a way to collect these materials for you****
Lab Notebooks:
We will be participating in several lab activities this semester to help connect our understanding of
the textbook material and discussion material to real life applications. Each student will be
required to have a lab notebook to record notes and data during the lab. This will then be used to
do short lab reports at the end of the lab activities. Learning to record and detail what you are
doing in lab is a central component of successful scientists. If gives us the opportunity to reflect
and determine what has happened during our scientific investigation. These lab notebooks will be
collected at least 3 times during the semester so I can give you feedback and grades for your lab
write-ups. An acceptable notebook would be any notebook that is bound together.
Late Work:
Late work will be accepted with a valid excuse. This would include things such as a death in the
family, admittance to the emergency room, and extreme family emergencies. I will require
documentation to verify said excuses. I will not accept late work for if you were late because of
school sporting event, your family decided to go on vacation etc. If turning in late work you will
have one day upon returning to school to submit the work without penalty. After this period you
will receive point deductions until it is turned in.
Cheating and Plagiarism:
I take both of these issues very seriously. If you are caught cheating on any assignment or exam
you will receive a failing grade no questions asked. Please do your own work unless it is assigned
as a group project in which you will be expected to complete together. Your group members will
have the opportunity to anonymously review the work each group member has completed so all
members are held accountable to help complete the project.
Plagiarism is also a serious offense in this class and will not be tolerated. I understand it may be
easy at times to unintentionally plagiarize when doing research or writing for an assignment,
however, as we will discuss in class always cite your sources. Even if you are in doubt cite your
source.
