1) All students shall have ready access to all materials needed for academic achievement at Daniel L. Perez
Elementary School.
2) All students will participate in reading enhancement programs, library skill lessons, and literature appreciation
projects facilitated by the librarian.
3) All students will be introduced to advanced media technology and have the opportunity to experience its use.
4) Required supplies and equipment will be made available and maintained to make the achievement of our goals
and objectives a reality.
Program Components
1. Curriculum
Needs Addressed:
The curriculum of D.L. Perez Library should reflect the mission of the Department of Education which is to
provide information to students and staff in a variety of formats, teach the skill to use and instill the desire to read and
explore as lifelong learners. To fulfill this mission, the library should be able to provide library skills instructions that
enable the students to locate library materials and resources that they need to achieve academic excellence. Students
should be taught research skills using the different reference books and categories of the Dewey Decimal
Classification System. Curriculum should also include skills to reinforce their knowledge and standardized tests. All
library skills instruction should be aligned with Guam Department of Education and AASL standards.
Objectives:
1. To provide library skills instruction which are aligned with standards of Guam Department of Education and the
AASL standards.
2. To provide the effective usage of a wide-range of library materials, resources, equipment and technology in order
to meet the needs of students abilities and interests.

2. Technology
Needs Addressed:
With advanced technology, the library should be able to address it by purchasing technological tools like
multimedia equipment, soft wares, DVD players and other equipment. The role of the library as the Multimedia
Information Center can be achieved by having the equipment accessible to the students.
Objectives:
To provide technological hardware, software and internet software and internet access for student and teacher
use
To introduce students to basics computer components and skills
To introduce students to programs and accessories that enhance learning exploration
To expose students to technology that will be useful in future academics and careers
To encourage the use of technology and learning practices

Conclusion:
With the use of advance technology, Daniel L. Perez Elementary School can produce more students who are
ready to further schooling and who are comfortable working with the ever increasing technology required for daily
life. The library will provide the resources the student research and exploration, most especially for those students
who do not have computers at home. The library will become an Information Media Center that will provide the
necessary basic knowledge and equipment for students to become users of technology in education and everyday
life.
3. Automation System
Needs Addressed:
Daniel L. Perez Elementary School Library operates on the Library World System. There is only one computer
in the library. The administrative computer for library world is in fair condition but is in need of upgrades. The
automated catalog needs to be assessed to insure that it accurately represents the physical holdings of the library.
Barcodes need to be purchased in order to input library materials into the system. D.L. Perez Elementary School has not
had a steady librarian for the previous school years. Currently, there is no librarian as of SY 2013-2014.

Conclusion:
The availability and maintenance of the automation system is essential for optimal access to information and
materials in Daniel L. Perez Elementary School. Moreover, it provides for the accountability, inventory and
organization of library materials. Student use of the automation system, most especially the OPAC, provides our
students with the necessary skills and experience to independently access information in any library setting.
To acquire books and other materials for the purpose of building a strong, high quality library media collection
suited to the needs of our students and faculty and supporting D.L. Perez academic programs.
To maintain the collection in order to keep it current, accurate and in good condition (regular inventory,
weeding, etc.)

Conclusion:
It is important to keep the library collection current, reflections of new discoveries in technology and science,
changes in world politics, updates in world history, and awareness of social/cultural developments. Doing so will preserve
the integrity and necessity of the library. New and engaging fictional materials are needed to reflect the current interests
of the students, and engage their attention and encourage reading for exploration, imagination, and enjoyment.
Information must be available in all formats or the benefit of the different means in which students learn. A high quality
collection supports the value of the library in the educational journey of our students.
5. Library Structure
Needs Addressed:
Daniel L. Perez Library is of adequate size and layout. Tiles were replaced within the last 3 years. Two air
conditioners have been functioning properly allowing a sustained temperature for the preservation of materials. Book
shelves are mostly wooden with a few portable metal shelves. Furniture consists of large rectangular tables and
student chairs. There are two donated plastic couches. Move inviting and comfortable furniture is desirable, as well as
independent student cubby stations. The current charging station is not large enough to accommodate both book
dropoffs and checkouts. Appropriate racks or shelves for display of books are needed for periodicals to prevent curling
and bending, as well as to increase their longevity.

their pursuit of academic excellence.
Summary Statement:
Summary Statement:
The school library media center offers a wide variety of resources and opportunities to students. It is a place
where students can read, check-out books, do research, and have access to internet to search information. Therefore,
updated media and equipment is needed to ensure students have the opportunity to utilize applications and make use of
technological advancement. The long term impact is that the students will have developed the use of the library media
center and its resources to gain lifelong knowledge.
