Regions of the United States

Standards
SS.5.G.6 Compare and contrast the various
regions of the United States; locate each of the
fifty United States and correlate them with their
regions.
Objectives
The students will identify each of the fifty
United States, correlate them with their regions,
compare and contrast the various regions and be
able to explain why the United States is divided
into regions and how this division helps us better
understand our country.

Summary of activities/procedures

1. Engage

The teacher candidate will begin the

lesson with a condensed version of Seethink-wonder.
Students will be given one minute to look
at the picture projected on the board,
think about what they see in the picture
and make a guess as to what region they
believe it is a picture of.
The students will then be given one
minute to discuss with their partners
what region they believe is being shown.
This activity is called think-pair-share.
The students are separated into four
rows: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday. After the students participate
in the think-pair-share, the teacher
candidate will call on one person per row
to share what region they and their
partner believed the picture to be of.
After each row gives their guess, the
teacher candidate will reveal what region
was represented in the picture and
proceed to discuss that region.
. Explore
The teacher candidate will introduce the
five regions of the United States and the

states that compose them.

The students will be given a graphic
organizer to fill out on the different
regions during the lesson.
The students will need to write down the
following for each region on their graphic
organizer:
o Name of the region
o Label each state in that
region
o Name of each state
o Geography of each region
o Climate of each region
