Introduction
Who likes hamburgers? What do you like on your hamburger?
Can anyone remind me what a paragraph is?
What are the three components of a paragraph?
- Pose these questions to the whole group. After students have
answered us this as a chance to refresh all students minds of
yesterdays lesson.
We are going to write a paragraph today, what should our topic
be?
Body
As a class we will decide what the topic of our paragraph will
be. Ideas could be Canada, school, or winter. Once a topic has
been chosen as a class we will brainstorm on the board what
we could write about that would relate to that topic. This
brainstorm session should include ideas that students could

easily write a topic sentence, 3 detail sentences, and a
conclusion sentence. The ideas will be posted on the board,
however the students will have to form them into sentences,
and will have the choice which ideas they use for their 3 detail
paragraphs

Will observe if students are coming up with concrete

ideas to support the topic.
- Will make mental notes of students whom are
participating and understanding paragraphs
- Ask students what they think would be a good closing
sentence, based on the information we have
brainstormed.
Hamburger paragraph activity
- First I will start off by using the hamburger poster to
explain how a paragraph and a hamburger are similar.
- The introductory sentence is the top bun. This should be
exciting, and introduce your topic to the reader. It should
also be simple, and concrete. Just like the top bun, the
introductory sentence is at the top of the paragraph.
- Next come the detail sentences of the paragraph. These
are similar to the meat, cheese, tomato and lettuce that
would be a on a burger. These details should be
interesting and delicious, just like the toppings of a
burger. They should describe the topic, and elaborate on
your topic.
- Now how would a hamburger taste if it had ketchup,
mustard, relish, mayonnaise, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes,
cheddar cheese, swiss cheese, barbeque sauce, onions,
and olives on top? Probably not very good, just like a
paragraph with too many details would be hard to read
and boring. This is why we keep our paragraphs
between 5 and 8 sentences.
- The last portion is the bottom bun of a hamburger; this
keeps the whole hamburger together, and works with
the top bun to make the perfect burger. This is similar to
how the concluding sentence works. The concluding
sentence ties all your details together, and often repeats
the topic sentence but not directly.
- Students will now be given a hamburger worksheet that
they will use to write their own paragraph based on our
brainstorming from the beginning. They will be given
time to work on it on their own.
- I will circulate the classroom while students are working
on their paragraphs, and check to see everyone is on
the right track. Check their sentences, grammar, and
spelling.
- Students will hand in their hamburgers for me, they will
not be marked, and I will let students know that. This will
allow me to assess them, and decide where to take my
next lesson.
Closure
We will come back as a group, and students will be asked to
read different parts of their paragraphs. This will allow me to
assess where the class Is at, and will also give students a
chance to share with one another.
Next lesson will focus on different types of paragraphs, and
distinguishing them from one another.
