INTERNET
An international network that
provides communication and
application services to
businesses and their consumers,
governments, and educational
institutions (Utah Education
Network).

ONLINE
The state in which one
computer connects to another
computer or a server through
the use of a network (Utah
Education Network).

The act of one computer


communicating with another.

HOME PAGE
A websites main or opening
page.

It usually serves as an index


or table of contents, allowing
users to navigate to other
documents within the site
(Utah Education Network).

BROWSER
Software used to browse the
content of the World Wide
Web (Hawthorne).

Examples: Microsoft's Internet


Explorer, Mozilla Firefox,
Google Chrome, and Apple
Safari.

BYOD
(BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE)

An initiative in which students


bring their own technology to
school with them rather than
using school issued devices
(Education Technology
Dictionary, 2014).

This typically includes laptops


and tablet devices.

NETWORK
Multiple computers that are
connected to allow users to
share files and devices (Utah
Education Network)

Shared devices can include


printers, servers, and storage
devices.

SEARCH ENGINE
A Website that lets users
search for websites, pictures,
videos, etc. by using
keywords (Hawthorne).

Examples include Google,


Yahoo, and Bing.

URL
Uniform Resource Locator
The addressing structure that
is used by the World Wide
Web (Hawthorne).

ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING
Online learning that occurs intermittently or with a time delay.
Examples include self-paced courses, Internet or CD-ROM courses,
online discussion groups, and e-mail (Utah Education Network).

SYNCHRONOUS
LEARNING
Online learning that occurs in real
time.

All participants are online at the


same time and interact with the
teacher through online resources
(Utah Education Network).

UPLOAD
Copying and storing data
from one computer over to
another computer through
the use of a network (Utah
Education Network).

VIRUS
A destructive type of computer
program that attempts to disrupt
the normal operation of a
computer, rewrite or delete
information from storage devices,
and in some cases, cause
physical damage to the
computer (Utah Education
Network).

HYBRID/BLENDED
LEARNING
Classroom structure that
combines face-to-face and
online learning strategies.

Lesson are presented through


both teacher interaction and
personal devices (Education
Technology Dictionary, 2014).

NETIQUETTE
Manners or expected behavior
for interacting with people
online.

The rules of conduct for


online or internet users (Utah
Education Network).

WIRELESS
A device that can operate without
or with limited use of wires.

Any technology that uses radio


or light waves to transmit and
receive information (Hawthorne).
