Dear Dr. Bruce,

The purpose of this letter is to demonstrate that I have accomplished the student learning
outcomes (SLOs) stated in the syllabus. The documents contained in this portfolio include a
progress report written for you and the iFixit team along with the draft with your comments, and
the peer review. In addition, this portfolio includes the results section from my recommendation
report and a peer review done for another group. I believe that these three documents are a great
representation of my proficiency in writing throughout the semester because it meets the
requirements of all six SLOs. The SLOs will be listed in order along with each document that has
satisfied the requirements.
The first student learning outcome is to Show proficiency in writing formally and informally,
in-class and out-of-class, for a variety of audiences and purposes (Bruce 1). The progress report
document satisfies the first SLO by using formal writing for a variety of audiences because it is
written for you and the iFixit team. The purpose of the document is to inform you and the iFixit
team the progress that was made with the project. In addition, this letter is formally written to
persuade you that my work satisfies the six SLOs. Lastly, the peer review from the progress
report satisfies the informal writing that was done to provide feedback for my peers.
The second student learning outcome is Using the appropriate majors customary citation style,
ethically cite and communicate information from a variety of discipline-appropriate sources (Bruce
1). The second SLO requirement is satisfied by an excerpt from the results section of my
recommendation report. The results section uses appropriate citation styles, APA format, for the
Health Science department. The information cited in the results section was taken from online
research, analyzed, organized, and incorporated into the recommendation report. The results section
also shows my ability to communicate information from a variety of sources in an appropriate
manner.
The third SLO is Compare, evaluate, synthesize, and communicate carefully, objectively, and
persuasively the relative merits of alternative or opposing arguments, assumptions, and cultural
values. Integrate this evaluative work into ones own persuasive arguments (Bruce, 1).This cover
letter satisfies the third SLO because it is used to persuade you that the work in my portfolio meets
all six SLOs. Each paragraph in this cover letter states the SLO and provides specific documents and
examples that satisfy each requirement.
The fourth SLO is Organize ones thoughts and communicate them clearly and coherently to
address a rhetorical situation (Bruce, 1). The progress report satisfies the fourth SLO because it is
clearly organized with bolded sections and headings. In addition, the different sections and titles
allow the message to be communicated to the audience.

The fifth SLO is Recognize, evaluate, and employ the features and contexts of language and design
that express and influence meaning and that demonstrate sensitivity to gender and cultural
differences (Bruce, 1). The progress report satisfies the fifth SLO because it demonstrates gender
equality and sensitive language that does not show differences between gender and cultures. The
progress report is written to a general audience since the iFixit team audience can be either male or
female.
The sixth SLO is Improve ones own and others writing skills through the assessment and critique
of written works (Bruce 1). As shown in the portfolio, the draft and the final draft are included
which shows the improvement made from feedback given by you and other peers. In addition, a peer
review done for another group is included in the additional work tab to show that as a group we
helped another group improve their report.
This portfolio represents the achievements in my writing compiled throughout the semester to show
the proficiency in my writing skills. I believe that I have acquired enough knowledge to be able to
write documents throughout my education and career. The six SLOs achieved in this class have
helped me gain experience in writing formal letters, memos, proposals, and resumes which will guide
me to reach my goal of becoming a nurse.
Sincerely,
Susana Garcia
