Group: Kelly, Maxiel, Teressa

Math: CC. 5. NBT.6 Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to
hundredths
Time: 3 math periods
Materials: chart paper, differentiated practice sheets, differentiated homework sheets, chart paper,
markers, differentiated scoot cards, copies of scoot answer sheet, graph paper, multiplication charts,
math checklists
Aim: How do we solve multiplication problems with decimal numbers?
Period 1: Review of Multiplying Decimals as a Skill
On Smart Board: Do Now: Mr. Pearl went to the science store to buy some new magnifying glasses for a
project he wanted to do. Mr. Pearl bought 3 magnifying glasses. Each one cost $2.25. How much did Mr.
Pearl spend in total?

Students will show their work and explain in full sentences how they solved the problem
Students will have about 8 minutes to complete the Do Now
Students will then have a chance to discuss the method they used to solve the problem while
the teacher facilitates conversation and records responses on the board
Students will be asked to check their work and try to solve the problem in two different ways
(repeated addition and multiplication)
The teacher will complete the Do Now problem on the smartboard while students follow along
and students copy and follow. Teacher will see if the students have any questions. Students
have previously been exposed to adding and subtracting numbers.
The teacher will put notes on the board reviewing the definition of value and the decimal places
to the right of a decimal.
Teacher will also remind students how to count the decimal places in the equation to find out
where to place it in the solution.

Independent Practice: Period 2: Playing Scoot

(10 minutes)

Teacher will give out the score sheet or the answer grid with eight boxes on it corresponding
with 8 different task cards. This is where the students will show their work and write their
solutions.
Task cards on differentiated levels will be placed throughout the classroom
Students will be instructed to push their chairs in and stand up by their desks until they hear the
direction from the teacher to SCOOT!
Each desk will have task cards from all three tiers of practice problems (Yellow, Green, and Blue)

(25 minutes)

Every 4 minutes the timer will go off and the teacher will instruct the students to SCOOT and go
to a new station and will have another 4 minutes to respond to another decimal multiplication
problem.
Each practice problem task card corresponds with a numbered box on their answer grid
Students are to respond to the task cards in the corresponding numbered box. For example, if
they start with task card 8, they write their equation and response in box 8 of the answer grid
Students will be reminded of the rules of SCOOT, such as not talking, staying safe while moving
about the room, only going to one task card per 4 minutes, that it is required to write each
equation down on graph paper or their answer grid and their answers must be circled.

Period 3: Going over the Solutions

(25 minutes)

Once the game has ended and each student has made it around to all 8 of the task cards from
their tier, the teacher will pull a few sample problems from each tier to go over with the student
volunteers on the board. If time does not permit, teacher will review the student work allowing
students to make corrections where necessary.
Students will share how they solved a problem or will describe a problem they find difficult.

Differentiation: Determined by functional level of the student with this specific topic so far.
Tier 1 (Yellow Team) Multiplying decimals up to the tenths place by decimals up to the tenths place
and whole numbers. Students in this tier are able to use a multiplication chart and graph paper to
complete these problems. The students in this tier will be given maximum support and shadowed by
adults in the room during the activity.
Names of Students:
Tier 2 (Blue Team) Multiplying decimals up to the hundredths place by one-digit whole numbers with
few double digit whole numbers and decimals up to the hundredths place. Students in this tier are able
to multiply double digit numbers with multiplication charts and teacher support and review as
necessary.
Names of Students:
Tier 3 (Green Team) Multiplying decimals up to the thousandths place by double-digit whole numbers
and decimals up to the thousandths place. Students in this tier are able to multiply with little or no use
of a multiplication chart and need less support for multiplying double-digit numbers.
Names of Students:

Modifications/ Accommodations:

Lesson adapted from GoMath curriculum

Use of timer keeps students on task and keeps the timing structured
Teacher and paras will circulate and assist to give support as necessary
Teacher and paras will shadow Tier 1 students for necessary prompting and support
Differentiated math problems for students at different instructional levels
Graph paper provided for organization and structure
Number lines provided for students who need addition/ subtraction support
Multiplication chart provided for students working on mastering multiplication facts

Assessment/HW:

Differentiated teacher made materials on graph paper (corresponding with what Tiered practice
the student had in class)
Students will be given decimal problems to complete for homework.
