Critical Reflection

My academic multi-source synthesis essay was on the topic of lack of interest among
students and how it negatively affects learning, I not only witness this on a regular basis in
schools, I am have also personally fell victim to lack of interest due to boring and informative
teaching styles. The basis of my essay is that, students simply do not care enough to fully apply
themselves to their studies, because they lack interest in the material and/or course in general. I
find this to be the major issue with learning and education and thats why I chose it as my topic, I
tried to capture the sheer complexity and diversity of the issue in my essay,
Through my research I came across many sources, some I felt were credible and
acceptable sources for my AMS, others were not. I came across many online articles that
addressed this topic, although some made good points they just didn't have the proper credentials
for an essay such as this one. Eventually, I found sources that were very credible, including
sources from a board of educators at the University of Illinois. I looked for sources from places
of education such as universities and articles by professors. After finding many acceptable
sources, I had to narrow it down to only a few for my AMS essay, I chose the sources that I
found to be the most clear, as well as the sources that most related to my personal opinions and
views on this issue. I then incorporated the sources into the essay, to provide clarity and
organization and well as addressing the issue from many perspectives.

I wrote my essay in a fashion that was basically me addressing the issue of lack of
interest among students and its effect on learning, and then breaking it down into separate causes
of the issue itself to really show the complexity of the issue. I then tied-in my sources to
backup and reinstate my personal views on the issue, and to also provide credibility to my essay.
I then concluded with a brief summary of the essay as a whole and then a few final statements
explaining the relevance of this issue and its negative effect on learning.
I was able to create connections between sources by highlighting the areas of this issue
that my sources agreed on. To my surprise, I found it to be quite practical to connect sources
from the book to my online sources I found through research, this really helped capture the
relevance and importance of this issue in learning.
Although, this essay was challenging and difficult, I found it to be very enlightening and
informative and I now know things about the issue of, lack of interest among students and its
negative effect on education, than I knew before I started this assignment. I believe my essay
really captures the complexity of this issue and really synthesises it well, I observe this issue in
school everyday and I am also a victim to this issue from time to time, and I hope that this essay
really points out that this is a issue with learning and it must be addressed in order to improve
learning and education.
