FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH

SENTENCE:
A group of words which makes some sense is called sentence.
For exp: (1) I wake up early in the morning. (2) Death is reality of life.

Types of sentence:
Four types of sentence
1 Assertive sentence
2 Interrogative sentence
3 Imperative sentence
4 Exclamatory sentence
1. Assertive sentence.
This sentence states or asserts something.
For exp: Waqar plays Hockey. Faheem writes a letter.
2. Interrogative sentence.
Question is asked in this sentence.
For exp: What is your name? Are you going to khan pur?
3. Imperative sentence.
This sentence have some command request or advise.
Command: Bring a chair for me.
Request: Please help me.
Advise: Always speak truth.
4. Exclamatory sentence.
These sentences have some strong feelings or emotions of joy,
sorrow, wonder.
Joy: Hurrah! We have won the match.
Sorrow: Alas! She has ruined.
Wonder: How a beautiful girl is it.
Subject:
When we write or speak a sentence we name some person or thing
that is called subject.

Predicate: The part of sentence in which we say something about the


subject is called predicate.
For Exp: Ali is very hard working.

Clause: A group of words which makes a complete sense and it has both
subject and predicate is called clause.
For Exp: Faheem goes to university daily.
Quaid-e-Azam was a man of principles.
Phrase: A group of words which has no sense and sometimes lack of
subject and predicate.
For Exp: Under the table. Behind the wall. On the roof.
