Lesson Overview

Students need to classify the basics of fractions. Students will


recognize fractions using M&Ms and separate each color and
generate a fraction. The student will then eat one of each color, and
revise the fraction. Story problems will be assigned to each student
and will show work on how each problem was solved and a
challenge question will be assigned.
Curriculum
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
Framework/Standard 1. Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including
mixed
numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in
such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of
fractions
with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 =
23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
2. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of
fractions
referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators,
e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the
problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions
to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For
example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing
that
3/7 < 1/2.

Procedure
1. Teacher will introduce the lesson of fractions and break students

into groups of 2.
2. Each child will have a pack of M&Ms. They will count how many
are in the bag and split the different colors into one group. Ex. Red,
Yellow, Brown, Blue, Orange, Green
3. What fraction represents the number of each color in their pack?
4. Students will add, subtract, multiply, and divide two out of the six
colors, and if some want a challenge, they can do the same with 3.
Ex. 1/2+3/4+5/6.
5. Each student will be assigned mixed practice fraction story
problems.
6. The teacher will then ask various questions to make sure they
understand the concept.
7. The students will then enjoy their M&Ms

-Their completed worksheet of the M&M activity.
-Work shown throughout the whole activity & story problem.
