A hub is a device that connects multiple computers together in a

network to make a local area network. This allows them to share

data packets.
You can chain hubs to make a even bigger network. However, if
you send one thing it sends the data to all of the computers in
the network until it finds the right one.

A small hardware device which, like the Hub, connects multiple

devices together in a network to make a LAN.
Switches appear just like hubs the only difference is they are of
higher intelligence and a higher price tag.

Is a hardware device that connects the networks in a home or work

place together so the computers can connect to the internet.

Before broadband internet, computers used to connect to the internet through

the telephone lines.
The modem was used because telephone lines were only designed to carry
voices and not digital data. The modem joined the digital computer to the
analogue phone line.

A bridge does exactly what you expect it to do it joins two networks together to
make a larger network.

It is less expensive than a router but it only joins both networks if they use the
same rules (protocol).

Any computer connected to a network must have a network card.

Most modern computers have network card built into the motherboard, but in
some you have to add an extra expansion card.

A server is a computer or device on a network that manages network resources.

There are many different types e.g. File servers, network server, print server etc.
They often perform no other task apart from their server task.

A proxy server is set up to share a resource, usually an internet connection.

It works as a buffer between internet uses and to monitor internet usage.
Used normally by schools to block offensive or inappropriate content.
