in Adults and Children

BACKGROUND

Sudden

deafness

is

considered

an

otologic

emergency

Morbidity rate is approximately 520/100,000 people

Most studies of sudden deafness have been


conducted in adults, sudden deafness has not been
evaluated in children

This study to evaluate patients diagnosed with


sudden deafness to investigate the differences

METHODS

Sample

Population : 794 patients who were diagnosed with sudden


deafness

Location : Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck


Surgery, Kyung Hee University Hospital

Period : September 2003 to August 2012

Retrospective study

Consecutive random sampling

Patients were divided into 2 groups, those age 0-15 years


(children) and those age > 16 years (adults)

RESULTS

CONCLUSION

The severity, gender distribution, affected side, and


recovery rate were similar in children and adults, but
the rate of CR was higher in children than in adults
