Students will have six pictures of clouds on a paper
placed in front of them. Each cloud will be numbered 1-6.
They will be asked to identify a number and put that
amount of snowflakes (cube manipulatives) into that
cloud. They will then count each snowflake and repeat
how many they have altogether in each cloud.

Understand what each number represents
Count one to one with manipulative
Before the students count the manipulatives they will

manipulatives to count based off of my knowledge of

their counting ability. Students that are more advanced
will be given a higher number of manipulative to count.
Sit at a round table with four students in a small group at
a time.
As head teacher I will lead this activity while my assistant
teacher works with students in centers.
I will use positive reinforcement to correct behavior and
good behavior will be rewarded with a sticker.
A puppet will be used to begin the activity and engage
the students. The puppet will tell them that it is too cold
and wet to go outside. In fact, it is so cold that she thinks
its going to snow. This will transition into a conversation
about snowflakes and the fact that they fall from the
clouds. Students will then count the pretend snowflakes
(manipulatives) in each cloud
Because we are studying the winter weather in this small
group, which requires students to count pretend
snowflakes. It relates to the book that we are reading in
class called Snowy Day and also the snowflakes that we
will make into Christmas ornaments during art.
2 minutes to set up and present lesson and directions
10 minutes for students to complete the small group
exercise
1minute to close
2 minutes for students who may need extra help at the
end before getting new students for next small group.
