Lesson Plan 1

Target Audience
Seventh Grade- General Music Class

Aim
Students will be able to identify how many quarter notes and rests are in a measure, and be able
to identify the difference between quarter note and quarter rest.

Standards
NYS Learning Standards
Standard 1Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Arts:
Identify and use, in individual and group experiences, some of the roles, processes, and actions
for performing and composing music of their own and others, and discuss ways to improve them.
Prerequisite Knowledge
For the first lesson of note values, students need to be familiar with what staff is as a prerequisite
knowledge.

Do Now/Motivation
For the first lesson I will play the songTwinkle Twinkle Little Star for students, and also
guide them to tap the beats when they are listening.
Mini-Lesson
a. I will discuss with students that how we tap the beats when we are listening the song.
b. I will provide a Power-Point to indicate the shape of quarter note, and its meaning.
c. I will clap and count the quarter notes, and ask students to clap and count the quarter
notes.
d. I will write several measures of quarter notes for students to clap, and add the quarter
rests. After that, I will ask students to clap the quarter notes and rests for different
examples.
e. I will show students how to write the quarter notes and rests on staff paper. Then I will
ask students practice the written work, in which I will clap two measures of quarter notes
and rests for students, so that they will write the rhythm dictation.

Group Work

a. Students will collaborate in small groups.


b. I will model how to achieve this group work. I will provide four blank measures,
and request students to fill in the quarter notes/rest as various ways.
c. I also will provide handout for students.
d. I will encourage students to discuss and write down all the rhythms.
Sharing
For sharing, each group will write their best example on the board for the class to observe and
discuss.

Lesson Assessment
I will write few wrong examples few correct examples to let students observe. I will ask them to
identify the incorrect examples and ask them how to fix them.

Differentiation
a. In my lesson, I will use the hearings, the tasks and the grouping as the differentiation.
b. For the teaching modes, I will use lecture and visual mostly.

Final Summary
The reiteration of aim of the lesson will be my final summary. I will repeat what we learned for
this lesson, and the concepts of the note/rest values.

Homework Assignment
This homework assignment will be a handout exercises. I will provide four blank measures to
divide as two different requests. (See Attached)

Materials
Power-point and handouts will be my most important materials. There are several exercises of
notation corrections that will be used in my lesson.

Handout for Group Work

For Handout, I will provide one handout to several students (maximum), it is convenient for their
records and it also can maintain their records are corresponding.
