Bar Chart

Graphs Bar

The bar chart is used to look at a wide variety of attribute data. In its most simple form, it may be used to
examine one categorical variable, in which case a bar is drawn for each unique value and the length of
the bar represents the number of occurrences of the value. More complex bars still require as least one
categorical variable. A histogram may be used to analyze variable data.
Additionally, the bar chart may be used to examine the relationship between two categorical variables. In
this situation, a bar is drawn for all combinations of values within the two variables. This is referred to as
a clustered bar chart. The height of these bars also indicates the number of values in each of the
categories.
Finally, one or more continuous variables may also be included in the analysis to represent the height of
the bars. When a continuous variable, such as grade point average, is included, the height of the bars no
longer represents counts. The bar heights indicate the value of the continuous variable.
At least one categorical variable must be specified. If no other options are specified, then the bar chart is
generated with a bar for each of the unique values in the variable. The bar's height represents the
number of occurrences of each unique value.
If only one variable is specified then the variable name, or number, is used for the Y-axis name. If more
than one variable is specified, or a clustered bar chart is drawn, a legend identifying the bars is included
in the graph with the variable names or numbers in it.
