2 Problem Description
ASM instance fail to start following kernel upgrade due to mismatch of ASM and kernel packages.

3 Steps to identify appropriate ASMLIB drivers and packages

ASMLIB drivers are kernel dependent and have to be updated to match the kernel version. To prevent
this, after the kernel upgrade go to the Oracle site, find the appropriate version of ASMLIB driver for the
kernel, download it and install.
We can download the rpm for RHEL5 from the following URL:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/linux/downloads/rhel5-084877.html

ASMLIB download for other kernel versions:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/linux/asmlib/index-101839.html

Verify kernel version using the following command

#uname -a
or

#cat /proc/version

Verify the current asmlib version and check against the appropriate ones on Oracle URL.

#rpm -qa |grep asm

4 Alternative Approach - ASMLib via the Unbreakable Linux Network

(ULN)
Below is an alternative approach to install ASMLIB drivers for the respective Oracle Linux and Red Hat
Enterprise Linux versions via the Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN). This allows convenient installation
of the software and upgrading of the drivers using few commands.
Here are the notes from Oracle on installing the ASM library using ULN:
