ISOLA LANDSCAPE TROPHY 2014-2015

TRANSFORMATIONS
Since creation, the earths surface has continually worked its way, by trial and
error, towards the condition of climate and racial groupings that existed at
the beginning of recorded history. The length of time it took to do so is
beyond comprehension: if the evolution of the world since creation
corresponded in time to one year, then civilized man would have been upon
it for only one minute - The Landscape of Man (Geoffrey and Susan Jellicoe).
Even in this one minute of existence, to meet his needs, man has created
spaces that serve his social, religious, cultural, recreational, travel and work
related needs. And more often than not, there are spaces that transform on
a cyclical basis daily, weekly, monthly, annually to serve all these needs
within the same physical boundaries and same landscape setting. These
places hold the key to binding societies and transform magically to suit their
intended purpose without altering the spirit of the place.
Some known examples of such places are Manik Chowk in Ahmedabad,
Charminar in Hyderabad, India Gate at New Delhi and the maidans of
Mumbai and Kolkata.
The Competition invites entrants to study the morphogenesis, document and
present an analysis of any one such space in public/semi-public domain
which routinely transforms in character. The entrants are then required to
choose a site with an inherent potential of similar character (or work on the
same site which they have studied) which is suffering due to `lack of spirit and
transformative character and propose design interventions that would
TRANSFORM the site into a vibrant space. The site area should not exceed 10
acres; however, there is no lower limit to the size. The intention is to discover
and use these hidden hints in the landscape as parameters for an approach
to creating thriving places designed for people and communities in todays
planned and smart cities.
SITE
The typology may include (and is not limited to) streets, parks, gardens, public
squares, chowks, heritage precincts and many more. There is no limitation on
the choice of site in terms of scale, type and function but should essentially
be a space in public or semi-public (maybe institutional) domain.
