Peer Editing

Directions: Today you will be working on peer editing someone elses paper. First, read the persons
essay all the way through before making any marks on it. Read it for an overall sense of what the paper
is about. The second time through, really concentrate on the essay. Answer the following questions
while you read the paper for the second time.
1. Does the author have a good hook? Explain why or why not?

2. Does the author have a good thesis statement? Explain why or why not? Underline the thesis
statement.

3. Next, read through the three body paragraphs topic sentences. Are they truly three different
topics? Do they encompass everything within the rest of that body paragraph? Why or why not?
Highlight the topic sentences of each body paragraph in red.

4. Do the three body paragraphs have support? What is the support? Is it specific? Why or why
not? Highlight the support for each body paragraph in green.

5. Do the body paragraphs cite quotes correctly? Does the author introduce the quotes and then
explain them thoroughly? Highlight the introduction to the quote, the actual quote and the
explanation of the quote in yellow.

6. Does the author have sufficient analysis in each body paragraph? Does the person relate it back
to his/her thesis? Highlight the analysis in orange.

7. Does the author wrap up each body paragraph? How do you know this? Highlight each wrap up
sentence in blue.

8. Does the author have a convincing counterargument? Why or why not?

9. Does the author wrap up the hook in the concluding paragraph? Why or why not?

10. Does the author restate his/her thesis statement in the concluding paragraph? Is it thorough?
Underline the restatement of the thesis statement.

11. Correct any grammar or spelling mistakes within the paper.

12. Write an overall comment to the author. What did you think of the paper overall? Do you have
any suggestions for the author?
