Happy Holidays to you and your family! During the month of December, the students of
Chardon Middle School look forward to preparing for holiday concerts and holiday giving.
Our students participate in a variety of community activities to give back to others within the
Geauga County community. The support from our families and students is always
overwhelming to witness and I am sure this year will be no different.
Does your family order from Honey Baked Ham during the holiday season? Would you
love to avoid the lines and pick up your order at CMS?? Then be sure to support our PTO
who is hosting a Honey Baked Ham fundraiser from now until December 12th. You can even
order online by using the following link: CLICK HERE. The PTO will make 15% profit on
each sale. Our PTO is quite supportive of teacher/student needs within the classroom as well
as with providing social opportunities for our students. Take a minute to browse the options
and possibly save yourself the time and effort of going to Honey Baked Ham during the busy
holiday!!! Pick-up dates will be Dec. 18th and 19th from 3-6 in the cafeteria.
Thank you to all of the families who attended our Fall Conferences this past November. I
enjoyed seeing our students share with their families their successes at school. Our spring
conference date will be February 18th. Be sure to mark your calendars for an opportunity to
check-in at school. Because we value continuously improving procedures, we are seeking
parent input regarding the conference process. If you have not already had a chance to fill out

The holiday chorus concert will be December 10, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. in the Park Elementary
School auditorium. This is typically a well attended event, so be sure to arrive early to ensure
a parking space and a seat. We look forward to seeing you!!
The holiday band concert will be December 15, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chardon Middle
School gymnasium. Again, this is typically a well attended event, so be sure to arrive early!!

Snow-Day Procedures
Students and parents should be advised to listen to the local television and radio stations listed
below and NOT call school officials. Information will definitely be available through a direct reporting
system on T.V. Channels 3, 5, 8, 19, CNN and 43 as well as the major radio stations: WMJI, WMMS,
WGAR, WTAM, etc. School closing notification will also be posted on the Chardon Local School District
website: www.chardon.k12.oh.us.
Depending on the situation, the data gathering for snow days begins at approximately 3:30 in the
morning. The data for making Snow-Day decisions includes the following information:

Weather and radar reports

Personal observation
Input from local law enforcement and road crews
Input from district maintenance and snow removal staff
When necessary, the Manager of Operations drives the roads to determine the condition
Input and discussions with Superintendents from neighboring districts

When all of this information is gathered, the Superintendent, Manager of Operations, and
Transportation Supervisor jointly make the decision to close the schools or keep them open for students.
Please understand that there will be occasions when inclement weather comes late in the morning
and forecasts change abruptly, which makes the determination of school closing very difficult at times.
Parents can always keep their children home if they truly feel there is a risk.

Thank you to all the staff, parents, and students for making the fall season at CMS a success! As we
move into our winter months I would like to remind all students to dress for the weather. I recommend
dressing in layers as the temperature of the building can fluctuate as the day progresses. Parents,
please send your student to school with a coat. Living in Northeast Ohio, we can all attest to the frigid
winters we endure and I want your children healthy and in school daily.
Please remember, if your child will be missing school due to illness you must phone the middle school
attendance hotline at 440-279-0537 prior to 9:00 AM. Lastly, students should provide documentation of
their absences from a physician whenever possible. Any questions regarding student attendance can be
directed to Mrs. DiSanto in our school office. Have a great Holiday season and stay warm!

Scoliosis Screening
Last month, all students enrolled in first semester physical education classes participated in a postural
screening conducted by Mrs. Strickland RN, the school nurse. Students backs were checked for signs of
possible scoliosis, a lateral curvature of the spine. Referral letters were mailed home to those students
who failed the screening. The letters recommend that parents have their child examined by their
physician. Students having physical education second semester and those students without PE this year
will be screened later in the school year.

SHOUT OUTS FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT:

Outstanding artist awards for the fall art show go to: 6th grade: Alaina Goss....7th grade:
Grace Powell...8th grade: Ethan Klepac. These students have done outstanding work in
art class this year thus far and had EVERY piece of work created chosen for the show.
Congratulations and keep up the good work!
Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to this semesters art show.
We added Food Art to it this year and students came up with some amazing
pieces. We hope you enjoyed the show!

CMS Choir Concert - 7:00 PM Wednesday, December 10th @ Park Auditorium
Students will need to report at 6:30 for attendance and warming up.

We will be collecting Box Tops for Education in a fun & friendly competition. Simply collect your box
tops in a Ziploc bag and bring them to school labeled with your homeroom teachers name. The
competition will begin January 6, 2014 and end February 28, 2014.

The top 3 winning homerooms will receive a cafeteria voucher for a lunch treat. To add to the fun, the
top classroom teacher will win a prize too! Come on students, show your CMS spirit and send in your

6th Grade
It was great to see so many of you at conferences. The purpose of student-led conferences was to have
your child take ownership for his/her own progress in each class. We hope that your child has set some
measurable short term and long term goals for the rest of the school year.
Please continue to remind your child to come prepared to every class every day. This is the time of year
that school supplies might need to be refreshed. Some good stocking stuffers include:
pens (blue or black)
pencils
erasers
loose-leaf paper
independent reading books
binder, Trapper, or some way to organize work for each class
Mrs. Haeberles and Mrs. Rosengards LA students need to have finished an independent
FICTION book by January 8th. (Requirements: approved by the teacher, havent read it
before or had it read to you, finished it during 2nd quarter)
REMINDERS:
HOMEWORK- Students should be writing down ALL their homework in their assignment
notebooks - it is their responsibility. There should be something written for every class, every
day. Teacher web sites should be the back-up in case a student is absent or forgets.
ABSENT? - If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to check teacher websites for
missing work (web site may also have relevant PowerPoints, handouts, etc.) It is the students
responsibility to make up the work in a timely manner (1 day out, 1 day to make up work; 2 days
out, 2 days, etc)
MATERIALS many students are coming unprepared to class.
Students need some basic materials for ALL classes and are expected to bring them: paper, pencils,
pens, red pen, textbooks, independent reading book, calculator (MATH)

Team 7A Action News!
Happy Holidays to All!
We enjoyed seeing you at conferences. Please feel free to check Infinite Campus, our weebly
website or contact us if you are concerned about your childs grade.
Now is the time where students begin to run out of materials, such as pens, pencils, and notebook
paper. Please make sure your childs folders, binders, and Interactive Notebooks are still in working
condition. Also, please make sure your childs calculator is in working condition. These materials make
great stocking stuffers, the kids love them, and the teachers will appreciate it!
Victorian London comes alive in language arts as the classic story A Christmas Carol is the
reading of choice. The students will enjoy Dickens at his finest and learn about the Victorian society.
Students will be working on a research project about this time period.

Math class is questioning how architects turn blueprints into buildings using scale factors and
proportional relationships. We will also be diving into the world of algebra.
Science will be finishing up weather, and then checking out ocean currents during the beginning of
the new year.
In social studies, we will finish up learning about the history of ancient Rome and creating a
project on enduring impacts of this time period. Our next expedition will be the Byzantine Empire.

The teachers on Team 8A are happy to recognize Natalie Breznai and Domenic Mularo as our Students
of the Month. Keep up the great work Natalie & Domenic!
Team 8A reminds parents to visit our website: www.team8a.com regularly to stay aware of what is
happening in our classrooms. The CALENDAR page is particularly helpful, as it offers parents one
location to quickly glimpse all of the major assignments, projects, tests etc coming up in all of the
academic subjects.
Mr. Heintz encourages all parents and students to register to receive periodic text message updates.
These updates will remind recipients of approaching due dates for tests and forms as well as school

In December, Social Studies students will be learning about the presidency of George Washington and
the early days of our federal government.
In science class, students are studying weathering and erosion.
LANGUAGE ARTS 8 is finishing up their Suspense unit, and will begin writing a narrative.
ENGLISH 1 students will be exploring Lord of the Flies.
Math 8 students have been working on multiple representations of data. This means they are working
between graphs, tables, patterns and rules. Over the next few weeks, we will be applying our learning of
multiple representations to solving systems of equations.
Looking for a way to get more involved in the Chardon Local Schools as a parent or community
member? The Chardon Local Schools will be revising our Strategic Plan this coming year. Opportunities
will be available for citizens willing to help in this important endeavor. Those interested should check our
districts website: http://www.chardon.k12.oh.us/ periodically for updates.
The Chardon Board of Education will meet on December 8th, at 6:30 pm in the Board Conference room.
The meetings are open to the public and all are welcomed to attend!

Team 8B:
Remember to stock up on pencils, pens, folders, and notebook paper. Supplies may be running low
during this time of the year and they make great stocking stuffers!
In science, students will be investigating physics. We will be studying velocity, acceleration, force,
gravity and other properties of physics. We will be looking to expand our understanding of the Earth and
how it works.

In Pre-Algebra, the students will be graphing linear equations by creating a table of solutions, identifying
the constant rate of change and the y-intercept. The children are also solving multi-step equations, and
working with solving word problems using the 5-D Process.
In language arts, the students have finished reading suspense stories and analyzing the literary
techniques of Edgar Allan Poe. They will now apply these techniques in their own writing as they create
suspenseful narratives based on the illustrations of Chris Allsburg. Students are also continuing to study
sentence structure and the parts of speech. In English 1 the students are presenting their creative
projects based on The Odyssey. Next they will begin the novel Lord of the Flies.
The students have completed discussing the foundational documents in American History. They can
describe how the American Government was formed and the principles which guide it. Next, students
will discover how these principles are practiced. President Washington will become the center of our
focus as we discover the way We the people put these governing principles into practice.

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is critical for our students to become more culturally aware and globallyminded. To be able to experience the global classroom first-hand and see what they have been studying in their classes come
to life is life-changing and gives them new perspectives not only of themselves, but also the world around them.
Im pleased to announce that we are planning to take students and parents on an educational tour to Europe during the
Summer of 2016 visiting the countries of England, France & Spain. Were going to experience such amazing places as
the city of London, Paris and the palace of Versailles, the countryside of France including the Loire Chateau Valley, the
northern coast of Spain, the art and architecture of Barcelona and the excitement of Madrid.
This amazing opportunity is not only open to ALL of the students of Chardon High School but is also extended to you as
parents. I do hope you and your child will be able to join us at the upcoming meeting to learn more about this opportunity on
Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014 at 7:00pm in CHS Room 206!

12/15 Concert 6th, 7th, 8th and Jazz Bands (see below for details)
Please join us for our winter concert on December 15 at 7 PM in the CMS
gymnasium! The bands have been preparing for this event, and the 6th grade
and Jazz bands are excited to present their first concert of the year to
you. Jazz band will need to report at 6:15 PM. 7th and 8th grade band will
need to report to the band room by 6:30 PM and the 6th grade band will need
to report by 6:45 PM. This means they are ready to play at these times.
Concert dress: Jazz band members should plan to wear mostly black with a pop
of bright color. Festive or jazz-appropriate hats are acceptable. No
sunglasses. All other bands should wear nice, dressy clothes that would
reflect what one would wear to a nice restaurant, church, or a wedding.
Gentlemen should wear pants, collared shirts, and ties if they own them.
Ladies should wear dress slacks, dresses, or skirts. No students should wear
shorts, flip flops, or jeans. All school dress code rules apply (no
spaghetti straps). Please email me any questions you have about concert
dress or refer to the band handbook. At the time of this publication 8th
grade band has not yet decided if they want to go with a uniform color
scheme. That information will be shared as soon as possible.

The Counselors Corner

In the midst of the holiday planning and gift lists, we begin to look at our children and think about the
gifts and presents that will give them the most joy and will enrich their lives in some way. There are
always the latest and greatest toys, video games, clothing etc., which will give way to the next popular
trends and while providing immediate joy, may not last for long. As you are contemplating your gifts,
here are a few that will last long beyond the season.
1 Give your children a hug and tell them they are loved unconditionally. Children who know they
can not lose their parents love by not being perfect are more open to their parents about what is
actually going on in their lives. While we, as parents, are not glad to hear that our children are sad,
confused, or angry, knowing our childrens emotions allows us to talk to our children in honest and real
ways.
2 Share your core values with your children. Each of us has values and beliefs which we would like
to instill in our children. Often those values are not the popular viewpoint they may see played out in the
media or they hear from their friends. Openly talking about those values with your children will help them
make sense of your expectations for them and give them a sense of belonging to the family unit.
3 Give your children the gift of uninterrupted time and attention. We live in a busy, almost frantic
world with constant distractions. Allowing children to openly talk to you, without the computer, TV, or
phone chattering in the background, lets them know they are your priority and you really hear what they
say. I know it is not easy, but it will reap the rewards of a closer, more positive relationship with your
child. Time well spent.
4 Support your childs school. This may sound a little self-serving coming from the guidance
counselor, but giving children a positive attitude toward their education is vital for instilling a life long love
for learning. As important as math and English are to your childrens education, a positive attitude
toward learning and those who work so hard to teach your child, will encourage your child to seek out
education and learning in every place they go. Along these same lines, hold your child accountable for
his/her work and for communicating with their teacher when they need help, send your child to school
every single day unless they are really sick, and encourage your child to always do their very best.
These will translate into effective work skills later in life.

SKI CLUB

This winter the CMS Ski Club will be skiing/snowboarding at Alpine Valley on Saturday mornings from 9am-1pm, with lessons
at 9:30. Our season begins Jan 3rd and will continue until the snow is gone. Lessons are provided on the first 5 Saturdays.
After the first 5 weeks, your Saturday morning Club Pass is also valid at Boston Mills & Brandywine. All Club members will
receive 4 x $10 Value Passes to be used any time, at any location, for a lift ticket or snow tubing pass. Registration deadline
is Dec 19th however, to receive your 4 Value Passes before winter break, deadline is Nov 21st.
