Abstract:

Terrorism, as a violent criminal act, is an extreme freedom-fighting method, to which

revolutionaries turn to when everything else fails. The need for this extreme depends both
on the perpetrators and on the system against which it is directed. This paper points out
group and individual beliefs of the characters in Doris Lessings The Good Terrorist,
their thoughts, needs and weaknesses, which drove them to commit an act like this.
Transition of the characters from being regular citizens, through believing in the
communist cause, to becoming leftist terrorists is systematically portrayed. Childhood
traumas and efforts made to ease them, which lead the characters to the ideology which
made them into merciless criminals, have been analysed, with reference to defects of the
society that produced and molded them. Finally, the blame for five casualties and great
material damage caused by the characters terrorist attack falls both on them and the
society, in the sense that the characters became what they are because of their personal
failure to adapt to it, but also the society failed to meet the needs of its wretched children.
