Elements of Learning Theory

Multiple Intelligences
Our series of lessons aim at using as many of Gardners Multiple
Intelligences as possible, to allow students to learn content on a
variety of levels. Creativity is promoted through the use of ICT, and
students are given plenty of opportunities to build on different
intelligences. The following table indicates where each intelligence
is represented within our project, and an explanation of how the
activity or task involves that intelligence.

Explanation
Students are given the
opportunity to use physical
imagery, and manipulate
drawings and graphics.

Students touch, hold and

feel physical items, such as
bottles, aluminium cans,
etc.
Students can add music to
enhance their
presentation, or use within
their presentation to
convey content.
Students participate in
collaborative group work in
every lesson, and are given
opportunities to discuss
content, and present
findings as a group.
Students are required to
complete an individual
reflection at the end of
each lesson.
Each lesson involves
linguistic learning through
students recording
information in their
presentations.

categorise and order
information into logical
sequences.

Social Constructivism
Our series of lessons adhere strongly to Social Constructivist theory.
Each lesson involves the students participating in a collaborative
learning setting, where group work is undertaken.
All of our lessons focus on teaching content that is relevant and
applicable to real life situations. Recycling is a theme that students
will be involved with for the rest of their lives, regardless of what
occupation they pursue. Therefore, teaching the topic of recycling is
a valuable contribution to students learning. The information
taught will build upon students established prior knowledge, in
order to support and develop their ideas and knowledge in the area.
Throughout the lessons, discussion of the topics is promoted, both in
group situations and as a whole class. These discussions allow
students to test their ideas, synthesise the ideas of their peers, and
and build an understanding of what they have learned.
The use of technology and ICT in the lessons provides students a
relevant medium in which to present their findings, whilst also
promoting creativity in the presentation areas.
Cognitive Theory
Our lessons promote cognitive theory, through the exploration and
active learning of students through the understanding and
manipulation of information. Students are required to use abstract
reasoning throughout the lessons, to link information and solidify
their understanding of the content.
Blooms Taxonomy
Our series of lessons promote high order thinking in students,
through a variety of tasks and activities. The use of selective
questioning both during, and at the end of each lesson will aim to
solidify meaning of the content, as well as promote higher order
thinking.
Each of our lessons involve the stages of Blooms Taxonomy, with a
focus on the higher order thinking sections: Analysis, Synthesis and
Evaluation. Students are required, through the group tasks set
within each lesson, to use high order thinking.
