1. Describe ONLY the things you see.

Giant Panda with tears streaming down its body

Machete awkwardly close to the pandas facehuman hand holding the machete
Many bamboo stalks and leaves completely surrounding the panda
Some of the bamboo stalks have been choppedappear to be broken
Pool of tears below the panda

2. Analyze your use of the elements and principles. Please include positive and negative space,
balance and two more. Also talk about your composition.

SpaceI filled up my square with subject matter leaving very little negative space
ColorThe work is predominantly black and white (the color of the panda) with pops of
green, blue, and red
BalanceI took creative liberties in how I would flip to create balance so that one side
wasnt visually heavierI also flipped bamboo
Emphasisalthough I tried to balance all my positive space and negative space, I used
large shapes for the panda and but the machete very close to his face in hopes to draw
attention to those areas
CompositionI filled up my space so that when flipping there would be balance between
the positive and negative spaces. I flipped over all sides but the bottom flip is very subtle
to make it feel like flat ground and the flipping over the top helps lead the eye up

3. Interpret your reason for choosing the theme and design that you created. Explain your
meaning and message. Talk about symbolismwhen an image represents a bigger idea.

Black & white color scheme is meant to represent the Giant Panda
The pops of color were chosen for specific reasonsgreen leaves to emphasize the green
of the bamboo and to offer a cover of protection over the panda; red on the hand to
represent man ultimately having the blood of the panda on his handsmankind is
responsible to the impending extinction of the Giant Panda; blue to emphasize the fear and
sadness of the panda, the size of the blue puddle represents the great length of time the
pandas have been endangered
The machete is very close to the face of the pandaI did this to create tension and
awkwardness so that you feel a sense of the severity of the situation

I flipped the broken bamboo to the left so that you could see the man has already cut much
of the forest but is continually doing it
I flipped the machete to be with the panda so that you realize the cutting down of bamboo
will cause the death of the Giant Panda
I put many bamboo shoots to show the density of a real bamboo forest

4. In one paragraph, (4 8 complete sentences) compose a formal artists statement. You will use
information from above to compose your statement.
My positive and negative space project is about deforestation leading to the impending extinction
of the Giant Panda. Human kind will ultimately be responsible if the panda does go extinct. I hope
that my work makes the viewer feel an unsettled about this because it is a travesty when any
species goes extinct. The closeness of the machete to the pandas face should provide the viewer
with this unsettled feeling. My composition is meant to feel dense and tight just like a real bamboo
forest so the panda seems secure yet insecure at the same time.
