Scheduled for November 10 at 10:45 am. Parents are welcome to attend. There will be
involvement from some students.
School Performances
The past two performances were cancelled due to performer and booking agent errors.
When rescheduling we were able to get reduced prices. On November 27, Ache Brasil
will be performing traditional Brazilian dance and music. Parents are welcome to attend.
Mathletics
One class and a grade 7 math group will be using the Mathletics math web site for
learning activities on a trial basis. The students will be given a password and will be able
to complete their math assignments on‐line. The activities on the site match the BC
curriculum requirements. Parents are encouraged to visit the site and perhaps consider
registering their child to use the site. The web address is www.mathletics.com
The School Choir
Although the School Choir has several new members, Mr. Olsen requires a few more
voices.
Wednesday noon‐hour artist’s series
Southlands Staff Member, Bonnie Neche, is part of an Artist collective in Vancouver.
Every second Wednesday, an artist (poet, writer, visual artist) will be visiting the school
at lunch time to conduct activities. There is no cost for the sessions which are open to
everyone.
3. Treasurer’s Report John Stekl, Treasurer
October Operating Statement
John quickly summarized the operating statement for October; there hasn’t been much
activity as it is still early in the year.
‐ We have now received the gaming funds – half of what was originally expected.
‐ Subway day, and hotdog and pizza day payments have gone through.
‐ As a result of a discussion about the grocery vouchers, Lennie Sargent will write a
short description to go out in a newsletter to generate more enthusiasm.
Balance Statement
An additional $839.75 is going to the playground fund, received from the Vancouver
School Board as a result of the RHF “Lets Play” grant. This amount is being used to
reimburse the PAC, which advanced payment for the planters built this summer.
Amended budget for 2009/2010
Due to a 50% reduction in gaming funds, the 2009/2010 school budget has been
amended.
Carol Jones motioned to accept the budget as presented with

a) some minor changes to specific line items:
‐ Reduce Appreciation and get well fund from $300 to $200.
‐ Reduce Fine arts from $4000 to $3800.
‐ Reduce Arts and Craft supplies from $1000 to $800.
‐ Reduce library resources from $2000 to $1000.
‐ Reduce computer equipment from $1000 to $500.
b) Addition of $3000 back into the budget for field trips, as the teachers are struggling
with transportation.
Michelle Black seconded the motion, and the motion was passed.
One parent noted that they would like to see public transit being used more frequently,
when possible.
4. Fundraising Carole Jones, Fundraising
‐ Tupperware fundraiser went well and the school got about $700 in profit.
‐ Subway is now going out as a grade 7 fundraiser.
‐ The Christmas Social is on December 17th. The evening will feature the bake sale,
craft tables, a visit from Santa, snacks, and a live auction – one parent has already
donated Canuck’s tickets and anther has donated a Canuck’s jersey.
‐ Purdy’s will go home day after Remembrance day.
‐ Direct Appeal forms are out.
5. Other Business
Hot lunch Program Michelle Black
Nova Foods is a private company that provides hot lunches, delivered directly schools in
Vancouver and Richmond. Menus are posted on the internet and orders can be placed
on line, by phone or through a hardcopy form. Hot entrées range from $4.85 – 6.50
depending on size. Michelle Kokan will send a letter out a letter to determine parent
interest in trying this one day a week, and Michelle Black will organize.
Knit Wits funding request Daphne Beck
Daphne Beck organizes the Knit Wits knitting club, which is open to all kids in the school
at lunch time. The club has a number of projects that they would like to do, including
“Scarves for seniors”, or scarves for soldiers, but needs wool. Daphne asked the PAC for
$400 for high quality wool.
Angie O’Brien motioned that the PAC provide the club with $400 for wool.
Alison Sillmans seconded the motion, and the motion was passed. Club is for anyone at
Heart Health Fair Angie O’Brien.
Angie 0’Brien requested PAC funds to support the Hearts at School Fair, specifically to
cover rentals of the banners for the booths. The fair will be scheduled for mid‐May and
will include grades 4 ‐7 students for this first year. She has four volunteers already and is

hoping to get donations from local area merchants for door prizes. Additional funds
could be used for healthy snacks.
Jeanette Calderone motioned that the PAC provide Angie with $100 for the banner
rental, with the option of re‐approaching the PAC in the spring for more funds (if the
budget permits). Andrea Mullen seconded the motion, and the motion was passed.
Traffic Safety
There has been very little response to the request for traffic safety volunteers.
Currently, two parents are volunteering and one grandparent has offered to volunteer.
Ian Cannon wrote a letter and phoned St. George’s headmaster regarding the poor
driving in front of Southlands. More traffic volunteers are still required.
Playground sign
Dave Patina will put up the new playground sign. Thanks Dave!
Body Science
The parent session is booked for Monday, May 10, and the classroom sessions will take
place on May 13th.
