21.5 EQUILIBRIUM OF FORCES IN A CORBEL
‘The design of corbels, according to BS 8110 and 1S 456 is based on the assumption shown in
Fig. 21.3, The vertical load denoted by Fy is resisted by strut action. It is in equilibrium under the
action of the horizontal steel force F; and the inclined force F, from concrete compression with
a potential crack along the face of the supporting member. The forces F, and F, can be calculated
from the assumptions that F, acts at 0.4Sx in the compressive zone of concrete as assumed in BS
8110 compression block. Its line of action at the face of the support is at a distance equal to the
Jever arm from the centre of the tensile force. The compressive force F, should be mobilised by
concrete and the tensile force F, by the main steel provided in the direction of F,.
