MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT


BOOK: Yurtle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss
Turtle tracing pieces (one big circle, four
small circles, tail piece, and head)
Red, blue, yellow, white, and black acrylic
paint
Paint brushes and paint trays
Card stock for students, blue for water, white

Have tracing shapes ready, paint on trays, paper ready for handout

Students will be quite during book reading, and on task with the
art project while being respectful of the materials
1. Prepare materials before class
2. Read Yurtle the turtle book
3. Demonstrate how to trace the circles
4. How to put the turtle together
5. Clean up
Students are individually called to the carpet corner

READ the book and discuss equality and individuality
Have students look at the different turtle shells

Do students know what equality and individuality mean?


Have you seen different types of turtles? What do they
look like? Can there be imaginary turtles?

Making painted paper turtles


Demonstrate how to trace: dont press too hard, always
use pencil, you my use a partner if your having a hard
time holding your paper
Step 2, paint, mix all the colors, be creative
Add sharpie if you wish
Create the water background
Cut the turtle pieces
Glue the turtle pieces to the background
Attach google eyes
Clean up.
Circulate classroom
Are student coordinating to trace the pieces
Are students applying individual ideas, or are they
copying the exemplars?
Are students experimenting with paint colors?
Gallery Walk
Students will put their paintings on the whiteboard so they can
do a gallery walk.
