A mass of 6 kilograms stretches a spring 12 centimetres and moves in a medium that imparts
a viscous force of 2 Newton when the speed of the mass is 4cm/s. The mass is then set in
motion from its equilibrium position with an initial velocity of 3 cm/s.
(a)
Formulate the initial value problem describing the motion of the mass.

Consider two interconnected tanks. Tank A initially contains 50 litres of water and Q10 lb of
salt. Tank B initially contains 100 litres of brine solution and Q20 lb of salt. Water containing
5 lb/litre of salt flows into Tank A at the rate of 10 litre/min. The mixture in Tank A flows
out into Tank B at the rate of 15 litre/min. The mixture in Tank B also leaves the tank at the
same rate, of which some flows back into Tank A at the rate of 5litre/min, while the rest
leaves the system.
(a)
Draw a diagram that depicts the flow process described above. Let Q1 ( t ) and Q2 ( t )
respectively be the amount of salt in each tank at time t. Use the principle of mass
balance to set up the system.
(b)
(c)
(ii)
Matrix Approach,
If initially, tank A contains pure water and Tank B contains 90 lbs of salt, solve the
system in (a) using Laplace Transforms.
