GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF PUMP 2.1 Classification and Characteristics of Pump ‘The pump is classified into the following categories in terms of its functional characteristics: j— Centrifugal pump a [— Reciprocating pump \_ pisplacement type pump —] L_ Rotary pump (1) Centrifugal pump ‘This type of pumps pressurizes liquid by means of centrifugal force of its impeller, and is widely used in industry, Figure 1 A shows head and flow rate characteristics (H.Q. characteristics) of the centrifugal pumps. (2) Displacement type pumps Bree from influence of pump differential pressure (discharge pressure~suction pressure), pumps discharge a given and constant flow rate and are divided into two categories, reciprocating pumps and rotary pumps. Figure 1 B shows the characteristics of pump differential pressure and flow rate, (a) Reciprocating pumps ‘This type of pump pressurizes or discharges liquid by means of reciprocating motion of a piston or a plunger. ( ne = (Speed of zotation) x (Flow rate) 2 Speed of rotation (water neaa)?/4 (xpm), flow rate (m3/min) and water head (m)), which is determined by a flow rate, head and rotation speed at the design point, not being below 90 to 100, However, in case of Sundyne pumps it may be below 90. Reciprocating pump This pump is applicable to a wide range from several liters/hr, flow rate in a injection pump up to several dozen m?/hr in a multi- plunger pump. However, owing to its high price and relatively large~ scale for large flow rates as compared with centrifugal pumps it is used in high pressure areas only, where centrifugal pumps cannot be used. Rotary punp It has a lazge range of applications from a small flow rate of several liters/hr for spinning use up to large-diameter pumps of hundreds m?/hr as well as from low pressure up to high pressure. Since the gear or screw will be engaged together at high or middle speed of rotation, this pump often requires a certain amount of viscocity in the liquid handled. 2.3 Selection Guideline a @) Q) Comparing the prices of pumps based on the same flow rates, centrifugal pumps are most economical and preferable where applicable, For a small flow rate (below 1 - 2 m/hr) or high differential pressure, reciprocating pumps are preferable in many cases. For applications with viscous liquids, rotary pumps are generally used. Remark: ‘The applicable range of centrifugal pumps to viscous Liquids is, in general, below 100 cP. (In some cases, applicable to about 300 cP). Cautions should be taken because pump performance tends to decrease for viscous Liquids of above 10 cP. ronvo GF sa7an ENGINEERING MANUALS ‘Toro Enciveenmc Coan PUMP SELECTION GUIDELINE ISSUED | JUN.24'88 PAGE 5 OF 21 3. Vertical pumps are adaptable to process or sump use which needs higher suction performance (NPSH). ‘The in-line pump is suitable for installation in the line of piping, accordingly is thus mostly used in restricted installation space. (3) According to type of casing, pumps are classified as follows: (a) Volute pump (») Turbine pump (or Diffuser pump) A casing made in the form of a spiral or volute A casing equipped with a diffuser ENGINEERING MANUALS PUMP SELECTION GUIDELINE ‘oro Evanernine Coar PAGE 6 OF 21 issueD |s0N.24"88 (4) Classification according to the number of impellers is as follows: (a) Single or Double stage pump (b) Multi-stage pump 3.2 Scope Fig, 3 and Fig. 4 outline applicable scope for single and multistage pumps, and vertical and horizontal type pump. U.S.A. (License manufacturer: NIKKISO Co.) and provided with high speed. Figure 5 shows its shape and Pig. 6 does its performance. This pump is suitable for an application which can not be covered by single or double stage centrifugal pump and excels in general in economical performance compared with multistage centrifugal pump or reciprocating type pump, Since this pump has a nature of "Derby" and thus requires some prudence in application. In addition, there is Sun flow pump, a sister product to handle a small flow rate but it is not suitable for an application to process use with heavy duty, There is other product (Roto jet pump) of KOBE Industries (U.S.), suitable for application to a small flow rate and high water head. Non-seal pump A pump without shaft seal is called non-seal pump. Figure 7 shows its typical construction. It is suitable for handling liquid when no leakage allowed. Recently, it is used also as submerged pumps installed in low ‘temperature LNG tanks. Maximum performance of standard pump is 180 m3/hr in flow rate, 210 m in water head, and 45 kw in motor capacity. However, it may be also possible to use in range up to 2000 m?/nr, 350 m, 270 kw level beyond standard ones. For the non-seal pump, motor cooling and bearing lubrication are performed by self liquid in most cases therefore, it is necessary to verify if such liquid in usage is proper or not. If not, it is considered to inject motor section with clean liquid from outside. Non-seal pump includes also magnet pumps (transmitting motor rotation force to pump side through magnet). Self priming pump In case where a priming is not attained enough upon start, a self priming pump which is provided with self priming capability may be applied. Shaft seals are required at two places.) Because these become more expensive in sequence, such various factors as client requirements, specific speed (Ns), NPSH, pressure rating should be considered upon selection. Notes: (a) 180. pump recently used widely for medium duty use is in general designed 16 bars in pressure under normal temperature. (») Upon using liguid above 180°C, a centerline support pump is, preferable. (©) Pay attention to a selection of overhung double stage or overhung double suction pump, since it is prohibited in APT standard as principle. (a) As an element to determine performance of impeller suction (NPSH) we should consider factors such as rpm and flow rate (Single suction or double suction). In order to improve NPS, it may be possible to attach inducer in front of main impeller. (2) B vertical type pump should be used when a horizontal type pump can not attain necessary NPSH requirement or its improvement requires a lot of cost. (3) For high head pump which can not be substituted by any general vertical type single or double stage pump, an application of multi-~ stage pump is to be investigated, Before this, it is required to study suitability of Sundyne pump described in (1) of para. 3.3. Sundyne pump is competitive in price with multi-stage pump. (4) After progressing the above mentioned steps (1) thru (3), @ multi-stage pump should be taken into consideration for application. ‘The multi-stage pump comprises following types: ENGINEERING MANUALS: PUMP SELECTION GUIDELINE ISSUED | JuN.24"88 (a) Horizontal multi-stage pump = Horizontal-split casing - Vertical-split casing (Ring-segmental type) - Barrel casing (b) Vertical multi-stage pump In general, as far as the NPSH is allowed, a horizontal and multi- stage pump had better be selected because of easy maintenability. Under one of following conditions, it is advised not to use any horizontally split casing; = Liguid temperature above 205°C. = Plammable or toxic liquid with specific gravity of below 0.7 - Plammable or toxic liquid with discharge pressure of 69 bars and above. Since the vertical split casing (ring-segmental type) can not be disassembled unless a pump casing is removed from main piping, it is prohibited to use under API standard. However, due to inexpensive price in comparison with the barrel casing, it is adopted in many cases as for BFW pump, etc, (5) Non~seal pump has been used to avoid leakage or as for extreme low temperature LNG pump, And it has a merit in price for general use. When there are many of 7.5 to 11 Kw class pumps in one project, this type of pump is worth while considering, For a capacity more than that, it increases electric power consumption thus offering no economical merit in many cases. - RECIPROCATING PUMP 4.1 Classification and characteristics of Reciprocating Pumps Classification of reciprocating pump is as follows: Horizontal. ingle He imlex ower] “Acting Duplex Loeretca Double SH inser jultiplex Reciprocat -Acting ing Pumps Plunges — [~ Simlex Horizontal ontrolied| #H Piston Duplex Volume Vertical, Diaphraget] L_ multiplex Construction of each pump is shown in Pig. 9 to Fig. 17. (1) A reciprocating pump is divided into power pump and controlled volume pump in accordance with necessity of accuracy of flow control, In case of requiring any accurate flow control of pumps, like injection pumps, a controlled volume pump is selected. FoRM Aca00 14 ‘Toro Excnverunc Cour ENGINEERING MANUALS TEM PUMP SELECTION GUIDELINE 40178 PAGE 32 OF 21 (2) It is divided into vertical type and horizontal type in accordance with cylinder arrangement. (a) Characteristics of vertical type pump. Installation requires less space than horizontal type. ~ Less influence on grand packings or piston rings due to support ing system of plunger (or piston rod), resulting in good sealing. - Constructively weak in vibration. Less maintenability as compared with the horizontal type. (b) Characteristics of horizontal type pump - Constructively strong in vibration. - Excel in easy maintenance. ~ Installation requires a larger space. Influenced by plunger (or piston rod) self weight. (3) In many cases, the reciprocating pumps employ generally a plunger which is of simple structure for pressure-portion and thus becomes automatically single acting. It is possible to make it double acting construction by using a piston. (4) Many controlled volume pumps pressurize liquid through diaphrams. Usage of the diaphrams prevents leakage of handling liquid from ground packings. However, this type of pump is difficult to apply to high pressure use. Example: In case of NIKKISO SB type (standard), (Data from catalogue) Max. allowable pressure Plunger Gia, 28 mm 175 kg/em26 50 mm 44 kg/em2g 76 mm 15 kg/cm? (5) A classification is made in function of the number of cylinders such as simplex, duplex or multiple: It is preferable to use multiplex pump, except for small capacity pump, in order to prevent inpulsation, an odd number of cylinder series is applied in many cases due to the resistance with increasing flow rate. Unless other special process conditions (such asslurry liquid, high discharge pressure, high temperature, etc.) exist, diaphram pump is selected for process use. Capacity control for controlled volume pump can be made by manual or automatic stroke adjustment. (2) For any pumps which do not need controlled volume feature and is provided with a capacity above this, a type should be decided by comparing cost between power pump and controlled volume pump up to 1 to 1,5 m/nr. This comparison should be accomplished including volume control method and motor capacity. In case of needing capacity control for power pump, a speed control is used in general by a speed variator or a variable speed motor, (3) For any capacity above this, power pump is selected without expecting any volume control.
