FILM REFLECTION
On the last week of November, we celebrate the Mindanao Week of Peace.
And as part of Mindanao, Xavier University participated in this annual event. Part of
the activity of the said event was a film showing regarding the typhoon Sendong
which destructively struck Mindanao, specifically Cagayan de Oro City. Now, was the
film able to raise different ideas on peace? Probably yes. First, it shows how the
importance of peace which was realized during the typhoon. Second is how peace
can be obtained through us for our environment and lastly, how it can be retained in
Mindanao.
There is much more of peace that can be acquired from different sources, but
the concept of peace as viewed on the film is rare. Involving nature with peace
brought me to another vision of peace. Typhoon Sendong made every individual
realize how important it is to take care of Mother Nature, and healthy nature
signifies a peaceful environment. Just before Sendong, our situation was such a
qaos. Trashes everywhere, polluted rivers, bald forests due to illegal logging, and
unaware people can be seen. No peace at all. As the time the typhoon started,
natures reaction was far worst than what we did to it. And after the heartbreaking
incident, reflection from each one of us starts. Environmental projects began to
sprout and people are now more aware of their surroundings. Peace is gradually
seen from the city. Through this, I have realized that it theres always a war before
peace and a caustic destruction is often the only way to obtain peace back.
As a student and as a concern member of the community, making initiatives
is of great help to the environment because it would remind everyone that age,
profession, or societal level is not a hindrance when it comes to saving our
environment. With our little works like cleaning our environment or even growing a
tree, our Mother Nature will be back to its form and will reward us as time pass and
peace will be enjoyed by all of us.
