Year Level: 12 - 2015
Overview
English is one of your most important units of study this year because it must be counted as one of
the four subjects that comprise your ATAR score.
The print texts being studied in Units 3 and 4 English in 2015 are

Medea

This Boys Life


You will also study A Separation as a non-print text.
Assessment is based on School Assessed Coursework that will make up 50% of your overall mark
for this subject plus a three-hour examination at the end of the year. This examination is also worth
50% of your score for English.
To satisfactorily complete this subject all class work and homework must be completed while
attendance at timetabled classes is compulsory. As well you will be required to complete the
following SACS.

Semester One
Unit 3
SAC One
This SAC is a written response to This Boys Life. Students will be required to analyse how this
text constructs meaning, conveys ideas and values and is open to a range of interpretations.
A text response in the form of an essay will be completed under test conditions on
Wednesday, 18th March and is worth 30 out of the 100 marks allocated for Unit 3.

SAC Two
Drawing on ideas and/or arguments suggested by the chosen context, Encountering Conflict, and
making use of The lieutenant and other material; students will be required to create a written text
for a specified audience and purpose, and discuss and analyse in writing the decisions they have
made about form, purpose, language, audience and context. This piece of writing will be
completed under test conditions on Monday, 11th May commencing at 4pm and is worth 30 out
of the 100 marks allocated for Unit 3.

SAC Three
An analysis of the way an issue is presented in the media. You will be required to analyse how
writers use language to persuade in two to three media articles about a recent issue and then
present a point of view in an oral presentation. The analysis of the these articles will be completed
after school on Monday 15th June 4.00-5:45pm the Oral Presentations will commence Thursday,
18th June -26th June. This task is worth 40 out of the 100 marks allocated for Unit 3.

Semester Two
Unit 4
SAC One
This SAC is a written response to Medea. Students will be required to develop and justify a
detailed interpretation of this play in a sustained piece of writing. The task is worth 50 of the 100
marks allocated for Unit 4 and is to be completed under test conditions on Monday, 13th August
starting at 4pm.

SAC Two
Drawing on ideas and/or arguments suggested by the chosen context, Encountering Conflict, and
making use of A Separation create a sustained written text for a specified audience and purpose.
This task is worth 50 out of the 100 marks allocated for Unit 4 and is to be completed under test
conditions on Monday 14th September starting at 4pm.

Examination
The English examination takes three hours plus fifteen minutes reading time and will be held in
late October. You will be required to write a Text Response based on This Boys Life or Medea, a
piece of writing based on the context Encountering Conflict drawing from The Lieutenant
and/or A Separation plus an analysis of the way language is used to persuade. This examination
is worth 50% of your overall mark for Units 3 and 4 English.
There will be a practice English examination on Saturday 11 th October starting at 9am. Attendance
at this practice exam is compulsory.
