Your Nonverbal Immediacy Communication researchers ( Richmond, McCroskey, & Johnson, 2003)
developed a test to measure immediacy behaviors. Use the following scale to indicate how much each of
the 26 statements applies to you. Some of the statements may seem redundant, but you should answer
each one. 1 = never 2 = rarely 3 = occasionally 4 = often 5 = very often
_____ 1. I use my hands and arms to gesture
while talking to people.
_____ 2. I touch others on the shoulder or arm
while talking to them.
_____ 3. I use a monotone or dull voice while
talking to people.
_____ 4. I look over or away from others
while talking to people.

Part 3: Analyze the results: How does your score compare with those that Richmond, McCroskey, &
Johnson found of women and men in college: The higher the score, the more nonverbal immediacy you
enact. Women in college had a mean score of 102. Men in college had a mean score of 93.8. (This fact is
from page 140 of your text). Are your results as you would expect? Why or why not?
What does your score on the activity reveal about your nonverbal immediacy? Your response should be
between 100 and 150 words.
My final score was 92. The mean score of women in college is 102. My score was not as
I expected. I expected my score to be somewhat higher. When I speak to others I am responsive.
I interact by smiling, nodding my head and using hand gestures. I maintain eye contact and I am attentive.
After completing this activity I found that I am not as intimate when having conversations as I thought I
was. For instance, I occasionally lean into someone or touch their shoulder while speaking, but not
frequently. This is an area of communication that I may want to improve.
