knowledge on the United Nations.

1. Explain the meaning of the U.N. emblem.


The Olive branches are a symbol of peace and the world map represents all the people and
countries of the world.
2. How many countries are members of the U.N. today?
193 member states of the U.N.
3. How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when it convenes?
The U.N. general assembly is the decision maker on the important question towards the U.N.
When it convenes, they make decisions on security issues and budget matters
4. Does the General Assemblys vote matter? Why or why not?
Yes because they vote on who can become a member and they elect members to other UN
organs and that is important because the G.A is responsible for the dialogue between
developed and developing states.
5. What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters?
It is located in New York but it does not belong to the United States.
6. What are the main goals of the U.N.?
Some of the main goals of the U.N are to end poverty, keep peace with all the nations and it
was originally formed to stop a world war.
7. Identify at least two challenges that exist in following the U.N. principles.
They are hard to maintain because the UN cannot use force. Also, another challenge amongst
the principles is that a lot of different people have different back rounds and people might not
want to follow the UNs principles.
8. What was the League of Nations, and how does it relate to the U.N.?
The league of Nations was created after WW1 and it was created to resolve international
disputes.
This is similar to the U.N because it tried to help Europe nations to have peace with one
another.
9. In what ways was the League of Nations an example of early globalization? Identify at least
two.
One example of globalization of the league of nations is that it brings people together witch is
globalization. Another example is that it tries to develop peace with people which is
globalization.
10.Why did the League of Nations fail? Identify at least two reasons.
When WW2 broke out the league closed down. Also, America, Britain and Russia agreed to
set up a new international organization when the war finished.

What was happening at that time?

The U.N was created on October 24th 1945 and at that time, WW2 was going on and coming
to an end.

There were originally 51 member of the U.N when it was created on October 24 th 1945.
13.Why might the League of Nations be considered the forerunner of the United Nations?
Because the League of nations was a small organization that tried to bring peace to European
nations but failed and the United Nations was a stronger organization that was successful in
doing so.
14.What is the U.N.s Security Council, and what countries are involved in it?
The security council is the council that is responsible for the maintenance of international
peace and security. The main countries involved in it are China, France, Russia Federation,
the United Kingdom and the United Sates
15.Why might the structure and operation of the Security Council be problematic? In other
words, what principle does it appear to violate? Identify two issues.
The issues with the Security Council is that the level of force they can use can sometimes
become problematic and insuring there is safety in the parts of the world.
16.Who is the newest U.N. member, and what noteworthy nations are not members of the U.N.?
Why has U.N. membership grown?
The newest member of the U.N is South Sudan. The noteworthy nations that are not
members are Taiwan and Kosovo. Membership has grown because more and more nations
want to become peaceful with one another.
17.How is the U.N. funded?
The U.S pays about 22 to 25% of the total budget to the U.N. Also, all the other member
states pay contribution.

Keep peace between nations, fight terrorism, promote human rights and mediating
international disputes.

position used to counterbalance the strength of some U.N. members?
Ban ki-Boon and general secretary. It is used to counterbalance the strength because without
him, some other branches could gain power.
3. What do you feel is the future of the U.N.? Does it have a place in todays world? Why or why
not? What can it do to improve its position? Write a 5-6 sentence paragraph explaining
your views.
I feel that the future of the U.N will be the same as it is doing now. As time goes on, the U.N will
hopefully recruit more and more nations and they can become more peaceful. It does have a
place in todays world and to improve their position they are going to have to strengthen their
power so the military will not have to be the only option left.
