explain a concept or press. It may also
use diagrams to flesh out details in the
main text. It uses text features such as

Vocabulary Strategy: Latin


Roots
-Many English words are formed with
the help of a Latin root. The English
word may be formed by adding a prefix
or suffix to the Latin root, or the Latin
root may combine with another root to
form the English word. To figure out
the meaning of an unfamiliar word, you
can look to see if there is a familiar
Latin root.

-The most important point an author makes


about a topic is the main idea. When reading
expository text, look for key details in each
passage. Then think about what the details
have in common to infer the main idea.
